Lil' Matriarch Weapon or Utility

I just bought a Lil Matriarch for a really good price because the blade shape is very interesting. I didn't see the warning card like the Civilian. Does anyone know if the use of this knife for utility voids the warranty?

The new Matriarchs have thicker tips so they won't be as fragile if used for utility. It says this in the descriptions on Spyderco's website. However, if you're looking for a hawkbill for utility use, I'd stick with a Tasman or Hawk Salt, or Harpy, or one of their other hawkbill knives.

They definitely have thicker tips and no warning cards but I'd bet that, like any other Spyderco, a broken tip will not be considered a warranty issue so judicious use is still recommended.

I got a warning card with my Matriarch 2, then I heard they dropped them. I got no card with my Lil Matriarch.

Thanks, I have a Tasman Salt, the blade shape of the Lil Matriarch intrigues me. It reminds me of a larger Cricket. I love my Cricket and thought I'd give the Lil Matriarch a try. I know the tip is thin but I still think it has utility uses - and clipping tomatoes and other vegetables from vines is one of them. :-)

You can use the butt of a pistol as a hammer, I suppose. The Lil Matriarch will work as a utility knife. Not the best analogy but that's all I can come up with right now.

Gadgetman,

The only hawkbills I can speak for from actual handling are the Civilian and Harpy.

The Civilian not being suitable for utility use comes down to much more than just a thin blade tip. When you hold it in your hand it becomes apparent that it's design is clearly that of a combat knife.

The pictures and description of the Lil' Matriarch make me think of it as a slightly larger Harpy. Right now I'm testing the Harpy as a utility knife. It's much better for rope, and I bet it would work well for cutting a large tarp open. I'm looking for some old seatbelts to try it on. However; for most general purposes, a plain edge straight knife would probably work better.

I'll keep working with the Harpy to be sure I gave it a fair chance.

Thanks guys. I never intended to carry just the Lil Matriarch but wondered how it would work for purposes other than self defense and if that was why some changes to the blade were made.

I usually carry either a CRK, Strider or Paramilitary as well as a specialized knife I'm trying out. I'll just try it for a while and see how it works for utility. If the warranty is voided I'm not out a lot of money anyway.

was there a sabre ground Matriarch PE recently? I did get the brown Matriarch PE, but the FFG was awful, the sabre ground makes a whole lot of difference in terms of aesthetics, for that knife. If there was a sabre ground variant in PE in the new steel, I'd be sure to look for one. I love the wicked blade.
