Lil' Temperance Rebuild/Pimp Almost Done

I was able to snag a Lil' Temperance Rhino Horn knife on the forums as a Christmas gift to myself. I've heard about this knife but knew very little about it. It peeked my curiosity and I wanted one.

It was listed as a definite user and might be good as a user or a general use knife.

I got it and it loved it. It had a lot of play up and down and side to side, missing 2 screws, g10 worn out, lots of rust on the liners/screws, and the blade needed some tlc. Still love it.

Here is what it looked like when I got it. I took it apart and cleaned all the rust.
Tonight instead of sleeping I had some great ideas and I changed out the hardware, screws, and put in different washers and finally eliminated the blade play and it's still smooth.

more to come as it progresses.

Progress 1/28. Did some tinkering on my free time. Fitted Titanium standoffs. Here are some pictures with a few ideas.

Here's the poll Question:

1.) 3 Titanium standoffs?
2.) 2 Titanium standoffs?
3.) Backspacer?

Centering with tolerances of Blade to standoff

Standoff options

Almost Done! I have to buy a new tool for creating the 3 dimples in the one side. Also buying Titanium screws. .2 dollars a pop :O All the milling was done by free hand. Not easy.

Nice.
I've been searching for one but am always too late on the sale. :grumpy:
Looking forward to the pimping.

Spyderco will send you scale screws for it. If they are out I might have a few spares. Lock up is very dependent on correct tightening in mine, but when everything is right it locks up like a bank.

Im glad you are pleased with it. I had that knife for a couple years and just didnt use it. I never had it apart so didnt know about the liners having rust issues, sorry. Glad it found a good home!

No worries :) it was between the liner and g10 on both liners. You couldn't know unless you had it apart. I found that out a while back and I make sure to take all my knives apart and oil them up and put them back together.

Thank you again! I'm happy to have it

The Lil Temperance was the bomb in Spyderco's MBC line up back in the early 2000's. Created quite a stir when it was released but Spydie disco'd the knife a couple years into production..

I love a lot of the work you do. I'm going to follow this thread and see how this knife progresses. I have a feeling it is going to get interesting. :)

Aww man I remember that sales thread where you snagged this Lil Temp, I was just a few minutes late to the thread and missed out! But I'm glad you got it, you've done the knife much better than I would have!

On another note, I held a fake Lil Temp today in a local knife store and it only made me want the real one even more!

Thank you :)

Invective I was debating it because it was money order only. I'm glad I did.
I didn't know they made fakes. Pics?

Yeah, not surprisingly it's a Chinese company knockoff. My local store had a whole section dedicated to Enlan, SRM and the others which is disappointing, but it did give me a chance to handle the design without giving money to them.

From what I can tell, it's not much different from the original, besides the scales and the logo.

All Lil Temperance had green g10 and inset liners.
The pic of the fake you send me had thinner black g10 and full liners.

I vote for the three standoffs. It goes with the three dots motif on the presentation scale and the pocket clip. Plus it's stronger.

I'd go with 2. Just one if you keep the lanyard tube.

Brilliant knife, didn't think you did nested liners ;)

Let me know if you come up with a good solution to the heavy back spacer on the PPT.. Been thinking of modding mine..

I think I like the three. not 100% evenly spaced out but it goes with the theme of the knife. Definitely not keeping the lanyard hole. Way to small to be used and I never use them anyway.
Plus I swapped out those wax paper washer for real bronze washers. The old ones were literally a wax paper type plastic colored to look like bronze. Anyway the real bronze washers added some thickness to the knife making it need thicker spacers. The lanyard was more for spacing than an actual lanyard hole.

Almost Done! I have to buy a new tool to help create the same 3 dimples. I'm buying Titanium screws. .2 dollars a pop :O 8 screws needed.

Check first post for updated pics

Great progress. I've always wanted to try one of these. Looking forward to the completion.

The Lil temp is my favorite old school spyderco design. Besides the Chinook.
I really like what you are doing with the green carbon fiber. It keeps a bit to the original theme yet adds a lot of character.
Great job, cant wait to see the final product.

Thank you :) as much as I like the toxic green I have a different material I like a little better. I may make a second set.
I wish I had a second lil temperance. Lol
