I was happy to finally find a nice little tilt-swival bench vise at Harbor Freight and on sale for 8 1/2 bucks. I never liked vacuum bases and that is what it has. My work bench surfaces are way too rough to hold a vacuum. The best I have is an old drafting table and even it has scratches in it that leak and won't hold very long. Its rickety too. Sometimes I wonder where I was when brains were being passed out. For some reason I set the vise on my granite comparison plate just to get it out of the way - bingo. Now it holds solid forever and the comparison plate is plenty heavy enough to keep things steady but light enough to move from bench to bench.

Someone who installs granite countertops would have scraps that would be suitable for this kind of thing. The guy who installed mine a few weeks ago left a couple of large pieces of scrap that I was going to use as "smooth flat surfaces" in the shop that I am setting up in my garage. He had lots more in his dumpster.

tombstones work too. friend of mine got some seconds from a monument company. At least they told him they were seconds, probably repo's :-)

Repo's :D

You can have mine. I doubt I would miss it.

In case anyone is interested, here is the Harbor Freight item #: 03311 (2-3/4" Articulated Hobby Vise) . It came with removable rubber jaw covers, under which is V-slotted steel jaws. The V-slots are good for working pinning material. My main reason for wanting one is for hand working some of those tuff to file contour handle areas.

I have one ( a Wilton ) but the same thing ,I have seen the one at H F , if you will place soupy water on the bottom of it or on the surface of what you mount it on it will stick to a lot of surfaces that you might not think would work I have mine on a counter top with a rough surface its still sticking as we speak I used it last week also it will increase the holding power with water or soupy water

I use it all the time it’s a good tool, I mostly do file work I even hand finished a 13 in bowie with it its stronger than you might think
