Limited edition of the no-longer-in-production models

I was thinking perhaps it might be a good idea to come up with some limited editions of popular Spyderco models that are no longer in production.

Say, 1000 pieces of the 10 out-of-the-market models that some Spydie fans have been clamouring for but couldn't get.

That would be interesting. Perhaps some slight modifications could be made as improvements. Who knows, it may just pave the way for a Spydie revival of some long forgotten Spydercos.

The Spydermaniacs would be happy with their acquisitions and organisation will gain financially from such a project.

What do you all think? :)

We discussed this on the Spyderco website some months ago. It came up in relation to a wave of interest in the "Q" model that started selling like crazy last summer on Ebay.

Basically, Sal's response was something like old models are old models. They went out of production for a reason and Spyderco has no interest in looking back. To produce old designs erodes Spyderco's ability to produce current models and look at new designs.

They have also (according to Sal) suffered finanically every time they have produced limited run "collector" or "forum" models.

Not to throw water on you thoughts, but from a company perspective, let bygones be bygones.

Maybe you are right, Architect. Probably that's why vintage cars have retained their vintage value. They don't produce them anymore.

There's something to be said about looking forward all the time. Some of us, occasionally, like me for example, steal glances at the back.

"Hey, that looks pretty good and it's from the old days," I tell myself sometimes.

The bottom line, of course, is money. If it doesn't show a profit, then the train is moving in the wrong direction.

Spyderco has so many diehard followers, I really doubt it ever will get immersed in red ink. Quality and top-notch customer service are always part of a winning formula.

Golok,

Here is one you probably haven't seen in some time. That in unless you own one already. Given the logo you have next to your name I thought you would like this one a lot.

For some reason the photo is not loading for me. If you don't see it try going directly to it at:

Its a photo of the Spyderco Cricket with black and pearl scales in the Yin-Yang pattern. Very pretty and also quite uncommon.

Thanks for trying to post the picture. I tried seeing the picture at the site you suggested. No success, so I am trying to imagine what it looks like in my mind.

It should be quite pretty.

Perhaps I will get the chance to own one of that some day.

Hi Golok. It's not impossible. I imagine we could, if there was an older model that could be updated enough to be different from the original. Did you have a particular model in mind?

Hi Sal, actually I was thinking of the Dyad.

It has a rugged appeal that I thought could be given a facelift. Perhaps if I put on my thinking cap, I may come up with one or two minor suggestions later on.
