I saw the Lincoln movie on Sunday, every trad. knifeknut knows that he carried a 6 blade congress knife on the night of his assasination. There is a fraction of a second in the film where he is seen using it to sharpen a pencil. It got me to thinking, I wonder who made that replica? Was it one of our favourite production companies? or a custom maker? or a production prop guy? I have no definite info, I can't imagine a movie production member having the skill to make a good one, though I do know that for another Lincoln movie (where he is also a vampire slayer), one of the arms craftsmen made a replica of it. The one Daniel Day Lewis carried in the film was auctioned off at a charity event in Ireland, I could find no further info on its maker though.

I read somewhere that Abe carved a better gun sight for I believe it was the Springfield rifle.

 Please check your sources. I believe the story is about the Spencer repeating rifle. Lincoln is supposed to have had a shooting session with Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, and encouraged its adoption by Union forces. How much of the story is true and how much is legend I do not really know, but I would start searching Lincoln and Spencer Repeating Rifle.

If thiis is not too far off the topic, what about a Lincoln axe for "Abe, the Rail Splitter"? I have not yet seen the latest film not do I know of any films where Abe lincoln's axesmanship is shown, but it would be interesting to learn anything about the size and pattern of axes that Lincoln may have used. Does any musum or book show Lncoln axes?

I was going from memory I didn't state as a fact, after reading Spencer I think you are right, I had the letter " S " on the brain.

interesting thread ... thanks for posting. It's not suprising that Abe had a multi-bladed folder. He was a man of many talents. It's somewhat ironic that it was a "congress" since most of his aggravation (internal) came from the copperheads in his congress. ;)

I've seen the photo of his knife many times. But I've never seen a pic with the blades open. Are we sure it was a six-bladed knife, not the usual four?

IMO,the movie had fantastic cinematography. Very period correct was the actors all made up,but, because of this, the actors themselves were almost un identifiable. Also,if you were not real keen on the politics of the times, you were quickly lost. Captions under the scenes to introduce who was who (character) would have helped.

Now I did not catch the glimpse of the 6 blade Congress the OP speaks of,but in this movie, actor James Spader whittles a bird with a Tony Bose knife, and the bird, was actually supplied by our own duckman1 & I was told he consulted ,on that scene.

I read somewhere", probably in our axe sub-forum, that there's only one Lincoln axe with sound provenance, and that was one he did some tricks with while visiting troops not long before he died. probably borrowed on the spot.

"Abraham Lincoln axes", started by Faiaoga. Guess you know about that.
