I have been looking at some Linder Bowies that use 440A. Does anyone here have experience with them? I know 440A can be terrible, but Linder has a good reputation, and I hear the heat treat on their 440C is very good.

What exactly about 440A is "terrible", a term which is not the same as "as good as....".

Many good manufacturers use old 420 steel since decades till today and beyond
if treated skilfully it's an amazing steel, 440 too
anyway I like Linder designs a lot
and it's Solingen :^)
since late XIX C.

P.S. japanese San Mai is basically 420 clads on VG-1/VG-10 core !
made good works all the way

Some companies do a great job with 440A. I've had some nice old Camillus knives that used it. Some companies don't do so well. My question pertains to how well Linder handles it, not whether it is any good. If you have experience with a Linder knife using it, please advise. Otherwise, this question isn't meant for you.

I got several Linders from late XX Century
May sell you one or two to start trying by yourself :^)

Buck 420HC is just fine, especially considering how affordable their knives are.I am a fan.

Do you own a Linder in 440A? I'm looking for folks with direct experience with Linder knives with 440A blades.

Most cutlery steel is fine when treated properly, and limitations are taken into account.

Yes I got Linders in 440
But only few are used and not extesively at all
so not big help providing negatives

but looks as you need some Linder hard beater here

BTW by rule of thumb -
if some German business exist since 130 years and no mixedbreeding in china
or other yard makers
must be good :^D

I don't necessarily need a Linder beat down specialist, lol. If you've used yours in the field I would be interested in your opinion of them. Tariffs make them expensive, and I am curious if their performance warrants the cost.

Yes I have a Linder dachs in 440a. It is a small lockback. I can get it razor sharp very quickly. I am no steel expert but after using quite a few knives at work over the years I feel their 440a is right on with buck 420hc. Off the subject but on the subject. I have a Puma is 440a that is great too.

An excellent point.

I like them
so never use them to any excessive jobs or tasks

but if you need to import them from some Free Country ?
that's really a problem
I may rest my case

Thanks. It sounds like they are worth acquiring. They're beautiful knives, as are the Pumas you mentioned.

Thank you for your help. I don't use knives as axes or prybars myself, so your insights are appreciated.

Buy one
You must see and touch by yourself
Sadly not so cheap
But cheaper than equvalent Boker Solingen pieces
Buy some ugly model, it's hard to abuse cute knife :^D

Or maybe rather infamous grandson of classic HJ Party knife
now Linder Pathfinder ?
