Can somebody recommend a brand of line for a line trimmer? I'm not certain what weight I need; the line trimmer is one of the smaller electric power Craftman models, so I believe I need one of the lighter weights.

I had good luck with a product called Star Line, which is hexagonal in cross-section. Not only cut better than the round stuff, but seemed to be made out of a harder material, so it lasted longer.

Since I went to an easy-to-refill Ryobi gas model, I just open the throttle more and let fly!

I honestly haven't found any particular brand of line to be superior but I also prefer a cross section that is not round since I cut a lot of low brush. Right now I have mounted some line that looks like a capital I in cross section. It cuts great but doesn't last and I have to keep feeding a lot of line to my burly John Deere XT140 - I'll probably go back to the square stuff. I use .095" line - yours might use .08" (it goes by diameter in inches or mm). If you don't have the owners guide, bring a piece of line with you when you go to buy new line - you can use a smaller diameter than recommended but you can't use a bigger diameter because it won't feed through the holes.

You can also mount a variety of brush cutter blades that can cause severe injury in an accident so concentrate and don't get distracted when using them. I have found that the diameter of the hole in the center of the blade is what will determine whether it is compatible to your machine - again, I'm pretty much brand independent and will buy whatever is on the clearance rack if I can use it.

I got a big roll of Baracuda brand once. Tough stuff and it cuts well. It is Hex shaped too and a purple color so you can see it.

My dad got my brother some hex-shaped line for christmas. :p

I've been lucky enough to not have tried it out, so I can't tell you how good it is. :D

Are you saying you can see it as it's being spun around?

You can see the general vicinity of where it is. The purple color give you an idea of how much line is out. If you trim against a brick wall or a fence it will chew up the line and shrink it. This will let you know when to feed more line out.

Thickness depends on the line trimmer your using, you may need to refer to the owners manual. For instance, my big old four stroke, 31cc, Honda (model UMK431) can use some pretty beefy line (diameter) , whereas my old little electric one couldn't use anything but pretty small stuff.

But get the largest your trimmer will allow. I like the hexagonal and square line much better than the round stuff too.
