Linen, paper and canvas micarta what kind of finish?

The paper has a smooth finish, good for scrimshaw. The linen has a layered finish similar to wood grain and the canvas finish looks like it's name, canvas texture. I like linen first and canvas second. :)

How do these materials compare with each other?

Thanks

If you are looking for a high gloss polished finish, paper based is the way to go. You have to be careful though because paper is the easiest to scorch on the sander and buffer. It is kind of a pain to get that finish also, you think you have all the scratches out and you start to buff and you always find more. ARRRRRRRRRRRG!

I like the look of linen the best it shows the best patern when sanded and shaped, but it gets dirty fast. it absorbs the oil and dirt from your hands. It is easy to clean, just scrub it with the scotchbrite side of your dishwashing sponge.

I like canvas also, but not all are created equal. Some of the older canvas based in brown or amber (Amber is worse) shows very little patern when shaped. Brown canvas based can ruin the look of flat areas on a handle.

If you are looking to try some of the brown micarta there is a seller on ebay selling 3/8"x7"x36" pieces for $20

I have bought stuff from him in the past Brass, Nickle, Micarta.
