Liner lock broken, CRKT

This sort of goes along with the liner lock thread posted on the 11th by the General, but I didnt have a chance to insert this before the thread mutated.
My first knife was an Apache II, and I like it so much that I bouht another and a Navaho. The Apache was used offshore in saltwater zodiac work, and was sprayed out with CRC then lightly oiled after each days work. Never a hint of rust. However, the other day while openining it, the liner lock fell out. Closer inspection showed that it had actually broken at the back of the frame possibly metal fatigue. It was just luck that this happened when I was not actually using it. The second Apache II is very different from the first. Lighter, cheaper working, and two of the screws were stripped out already.
I am not bitching here, just letting others know. It worked well for 8 months. However, the experience has put me off of liner locks. I wont buy another other than a custom that is not meant as an EDC. I now own only one other liner lock, an AFCK, which has been supplanted by my Axis lock. I had intended to give the Navaho to my son but not now. I have thrown all three away. I could have sold them, but if the same thing happened to the person I sold it too, and a worse accident had happend such as sliced finger, I could not have lived with the fact, so I tossed them.
Again I am not complaining, as you get what you pay for. I had used my large Sebenza for the same work off n on, and now will use it for every day offshore/onshore work until I find something else for offshore, that keeps a keen edge. In the meantime, I have a small Sebenza ordered for my son.
Hope I don't get to much flak for this post.

/the one thing I HATE about Bladeforums is if it happened to you it happened to you! Why some decide to flame over things like this I don't know. Thanks for the imput. My CRK&T M16Z is now retired and I won't use it again, I simply don't trust it. If I ever use it, it will be as a slipjoint folder and for the VERY hard use work. Its a Tanto in 6m why oh why did I buy this? At least its not half serrated!

My M16 flipper failed on my the other day also i was using it to cut the bottom of a pepsi can when it closed on my hand cutting my fingers of course when i posted this it became my fault i was not holding the knife correctly, the lock failed cause i did not open the knife the right way, etc etc simply put Crkt are cheap knives i also threw mine in the trash

ok guys now it's my turn to get bashed bring it on :)

I have had many problems with CRKT liner locks. Out of the 6 I've owned, only 2 locked up properly. CRKT has some serius QC issues. Liner locks arn't the problem, a good one is great...CRKT just dosn't happen to make a good liner lock. I too was cut when my Kasper liner lock failed. Other that CRKT, I've never seen a liner lock fail and I've really tried to get my Military to fail without success.

I would gladly take the knives off of you guys if you are just throwing them away. I would accept full responsiblity if I got cut by them, I don't mind. Email me if you ever think of throwing away one of your knives. Thanks

I agree with BalisongMan!

If anyone wants to throw away a CRKT, I'll take it! I will pay postage and completely release you of all responsibility for anything that happens while I use it. I love CRKT products.

I figured that would be coming:)
But don't forget this is would be shipped from Thailand and it costs a bit. Any way, if that is the worst slams I get, I can live with it.
Like I say, have only one liner liner lock left, an AFCK but it comes in handy in the kitchen. Oh yeah, and my Larry Davidson custom, but you'll not get that one:)

Lol! Fair comment! In fact just to be an annoying customer I will e-mail CRK&T and see if they will make it right. Its about time we made a fuss when something is wrong:p ! The postage will cost more than the knife, but who cares.

I still don't understand how you cut yourself in this fashion, since the flipper forms a guard that contacts the fingers before the cutting edge would.

Hi all!

Yea, it's my first post, be kind. I just found Bladeforums.

I have been interested in knives for quite a while. I have a medium sized collection which includes production/custom folders and fixed blades.

I have the CRKT folders mentioned in this thread.

I have not had any problems with my CRKT knives...none. I am not a Walter Mitty type. I use my knives and I use them hard. I think CRKT knives represent an incredible value, and most are built like a tank.

The gentleman with the broken liner lock. Metal fatigue? Probably. He has a valid criticism that should be brought to CRKTs attention.

The Pepsi can incident? Well.... How in this instance do you get enough pressure on the top of the blade to defeat the lock? How? As the story was told, is this valid criticism of CRKT?

In another thread, a gentleman complains of rust on his CRKT blade. He clipped the knife inside the waistband of his wet clothes for an extended period. Is this valid criticism of CRKT?

Not to get off the subject of CRKT folders, I believe the CRKT Polkowski/Kasper Companion is the most versitile fixed blade packages on the market today. A combat proven knife, two good sheaths adaptable to many right and left handed carry positions, and a super price. What company offers more? Name one. Can't do it, can you?

Uncomfortable to wear inside the waistband? Well sure..look at that gut on you. Too hard to pull out of the sheath? Well...thumb it out. Too heavy to wear around the neck? I know some spec-ops types that will differ on that opinion. But then... they may have a bit higher testosterone level than the average forumite.

Personally, I would sit back, think, and reflect a moment before I jumped on a forum and berate a company and its products.

Thanks
JD

Hey newbee stay outa this;) Lol!!!!!
Fair points on the rust, but a glass bead finish suxs and CRK&T NEED to dump the trashy steels and use something better. IMHO 8a aught to be the minimum steel. I note how they have even dropped ATS-34 from the S2 line and replaced it with an inferiour steel. Not a good move.
Welcome!:D

I will e-mail CRK&T and see if they will make it right.
General, I hadnt really meant to cause a fuss, and all I have left of the knife is the piece of broken liner lock, but if they do happen to respond to you and do want to make it right ie a replacement apacheII, I will donate it to the Forum in some sort of a "Why I love CRKT" contest or some such. LOL :)

If you have had problems with the liners on CRKTs, then buy the models with the LAWKS locks and remember to have then engaged when you use them. The KFF, KFF Pro, and M18 have the lawks lock. If you guys are having liner lock problems you should buy folders with rolling locks, arc locks, lawks locks, axis locks, frame locks. There's no guarantee that these locks won't fail but they are better than just a regular liner lock.

LOL man didn't i just post saying that it would end up being my fault for the lock failing how could Crkt make a knife that would fail lol lol o no not them LOOK the knife closed on my fingers plain and simple the lock failed, ya it was only a soft pepsi can Scary ain't it ?? the reason i still got cut even with the flipper is i think i had my hand down low and the flipper never came in contact with my finger to stop the blade Sorry i called Crkt cheap i ment least expencive :)

How did you get the KFF liner lock to fail when the LAWKS physically blocks the liner from moving and disengaging?

Hmmm, I've got an M16 now, thats been sitting in my draw since I got my AR last week. Was thinking of putting it in my truck as a backup, but have to admit all the posts lately about CRKT, has really made me think twice...

Back when they first started out with the apache and all, they seemed like a great new company that finally brought good knives to the market at prices everyone could afford, is this all changing for the worse now?

This liner breaking is the first such incident I have ever heard of involving any liner lock, made by anybody. Sure is scant reason to denounce an entire form of knives, and/or a total company's output. Has anyone else ever heard of a liner just apparently breaking from metal fatigue or anything of the sort?

Apparently some liner locks do fail. I have somewhere in the vicinity of 30-40 of them, mostly CRKT. Just got a few a couple days ago. Haven't done the spine whack on them. Have on all the others. Not a single one has failed. From what I gather, CRKT has been tearing up the sales for the last couple years. Given all the publicity anything bad always gets, I feel relatively certain that if anyone had lost any fingers or suffered any other grevious bodily harm from the failure of a lock, that somehow word would have gotten out about it.

I don't know tho. Does anyone live in the same county where CRKT is located? If the county clerk's office is computerized, a few seconds search should uncover the case #s of any and all lawsuits filed against CRKT for damages suffered due to knife failure of any kind. Sure would be cool if someone could take the time to do that. Of course, the same could be done for any other US knife manufacturer. Maybe they're quashing all publicity somehow. Keeping us in the dark. I'm having trouble figuring out tho, if this would be a conservative or liberal conspiracy to keep stuff out of the media.

I certainly think that if anyone was injured because of a lock failure that they would have good reason to question the soundness of such locks, made by whomever. At a minumum, I can see strenuously testing all their knives with that lock. But just trashing all knives made by the same company isn't rational at all.

I personally will not buy a CRKT unless I can test it myself or have my dealer test it prior to purchase. I've had so many problems with their knives that I'm kind of disenchanted with them. This is very unfortunate since they produce some of my all time favorite designs. If you can find a CRKT that isn't defective, I think they are good, reasonably priced knives. If CRKT would upgrade their steel and implement bettet QC, I would buy a ton of their knives. Also, the blade should be able to lock correctly without the LAWKS engaged. Using the LAWKS should not be a necessity.

i, personally have no problem w/a well made /executed liner lock - i must admit CRKT has had some probs in this area, mainly w/the kasper imho, and w/out the lawks engaged - i spine whack all of my knives now, and have NEVER had 1 fail, except the CRKT kasper - and i have a real crawford kasper(they do not have lawks by the way), and it locks up fine too.......wait a minute, havent we been over this before??LOL?? by the way CRKT exchanged the kasper that failed and the new 1 works fine even with out the lawks - i will keep that 1 for sure......anyway just my .10cents worth

I have 20 or so crkt knives, 95% of those are great
knives. I think most if not all production knife
manufacters have there own QC problems, small or large.
Problems I can understand. What they do about it
in future models I find even more interesting.
Improvements; this alone could make or break 'em
I do like my large S-2 frame lock best.
rock solid!
