Liner lock on Ontario Model 1

So the other day I was out in the yard cutting down some wood for a fire (small branches, no bigger than 1.5 inch in diameter). I decided to try batoning with my Ontario Rat 1 folding knife. I know this isn't really recommended for any folder, but I've seen people do it before (nutnfancy has a video of this i think) and it seemed to be okay.
Well I start batoning (I wasn't using a great amount of force, the wood was pretty soft), and I get half way down, and the lock fails on me. I didn't get hurt since the wood blocked my hand. So I stopped batoning, and do a spine whack test on the knife, it folds up everytime now. I don't remember if it did this before.

Does anybody else have this problem? Maybe the initial batoning screwed up the lock? If so, then the lock wasn't very strong in the first place (this was light batoning at best.)

I saw a technique for batoning with folders. First you get the blade in place and hammer it down with a log or whatever. Then you disengage the lock and fold the knife to about a 90 degree angle and baton with the lock disengaged (while holding the handle). Use that method and you should be fine.

Check the tang of the blade where it makes contact with the liner lock bar.

Also check the lock bar when fully engaged. you might have bent the lock bar a bit outwards, so when engaged it is not so all the way.

Don't baton with a folder. The lock is absolutely not designed to withstand that kind of abuse.

As for fixing it, the liner may have been bent. See if you can notice it\bend it back.

You batoned with a folder, a liner lock. What exactly did you expect - you are applying forces to the lock which it was not designed to withstand. If you have to baton with a folder, you should disengage the lock and only baton with the blade of the knife. Call ontario, see if they will replace it.

Yeah, don't baton with a folder with the lock engaged, there's no point. Why not just disengage the lock and make everything easier (if you're going to do it anyways)?

So the rock solid RAT 1 folder didnt pass a simple batoning ?

:D

Seriously though , I would hesitate to do that with a framelock what you did with a linerlock.

Stick to fixed blades for batoning. :)
