Liner Lock Question, HELP!!!!!!!

I just purchased a Spyderco Wegner by mail. After hearing so much about it I had to have one. The question is that it seems that the locking bar goes a lot further to the right when locking than any other liner locks I've seen. Is this normal and intentional or is it something I need to be concerned about? It locks up tight (for now) but the locking bar goes 3/4 or more of the way to the right handle scale. Help!!!!

sagebrush,

A properly made linerlock should have 100% lockup but it should be just enough to get 100% of the liner in contact with the tang of the blade. ALL linerlocks will eventually wear at the point of contact of the liner and the tang. The more wear, the more the lock will loosen. Once you reach a certain degree of wear your lock will show signs of being loose (blade play). Your knife will reach that point sooner than one that locks up to the left. It may still take a good while for you knife to reach that point.

Do you hear that?
That is the sound of inevitability.

Your knife should be fine. It should take a while before the blade develops where, and if/when it does Spyderco will take care of it for you.

The locks on my Wegners also are between the 1/2 and 3/4 mark. I have used them pretty hard and the lock hasn't moved any further than that. Spyderco stands behind their knives, so if it does develop play they will fix or replace it. Lynn Thompson (of Cold Steel fame) says that the Wegner was one of the strongest folders they tested. What do you think about the Wegner so far?

Thanks for the advise. The Wegner is a lot beefier knife than I expected from a liner lock made by Spyderco but I like that. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I'm just starting to carry it. I think it will be an excellent knife when the need arises.

Just need to throw in my .02 cents. Mine is at the 1/2 to 2/3 mark and still locks up tighter than a Fort Knox Bank vault. If and when it ever makes it to the point I need to send it back to Spyderco for maintenance, I know they will stand behind their product and make it good as new.
You made a wise purchase, sagebrush.

The Wegner is one of the more revered knives around the Forum. Almost as much as the much ballyhooed Sebenza.

Here's my two pfennigs also. The Wegner kicks butt! Mine also locks up at about the 60-70% mark on the pivot area, but it locks up like it's pretending to be a fixed blade! Great design, great materials (I do love ATS-34 and G10) and created by a guy who really knows hunting. There have been a few recent posts by folks who say they don't like liner locks because you have to put your finger in the path of the blade to close it, but let's be real. Has anyone even HEARD of someone getting cut this way?
Even closing it one-handed is a no-brainer. The quality of Spyderco's in general is outstanding, from QC of their production pieces to their great customer service. The Wegner is not only no exception, but is truly one of the top representitives of these fine qualities. I do love my Sebenzas, but I also love and use my Wegner A LOT! I've been wanting a Wegner Jr. too-guess it's time to do something about that!
