Liner lock question

Had this 10 since March of this year, bought it brand new from New Graham. I carried it almost every day on and off duty and used it mostly for small cutting task. I've noticed here lately that the liner lock is locking up really far to the right, is this a BAD thing? I figured it was just normal wear between the two surfaces. It doesn't really bother me but I think I've read here on the forums that this is not good? Thanks

I would be more worried about the leftmost one pictured truth be told - it looks hardly engaged to me. The more contact the liner has with the blade, the less likely it is to disengage and do something bad. As for the other two, if it's not causing bladeplay, then I would say that it's fine.

It looks like it's ok for now, but if it keeps going it will eventually end up against the far liner and potentially locking up the knife making it a temporary fixed blade. Others may balk at this, but I sometimes use a dynamic open aka flip open, and this usually causes the lock to edge over a little more than a regular thumb open. You might try this to see it this happens with yours and if it goes over the edge, not to worry. Emerson has a liner replacement service for about $20 the last time I used it. They'll sharpen it too.

A liner and frame lock will work just fine from ~10%(don't know if you want it much earlier
than that) up to 99.9%. As long as there is no play then the lock up is still sound.

If/when play does develop send it in to EKI and they will fix it for you. I realise that is
a bit of a PITA for a knife so young but that's just the way she goes. :)

Glad to see this post, do you have alot of side to side blade movement? I purchased a new Emerson 3 weeks ago and EDC it.

The lock started in the middle of the blade, and now is almost touching the side of the frame. I also have alot of side to side blade movement the screw is as tight as I can get it.

Owned a lot of other knives and never seen one wear this quickly.

Its the nature of this style of lock to self correct for wear and how quickly that happens is different from model to model usually. So long as no vertical blade play is evident most are just fine even all the way over like yours. The lock is doing what its supposed to do. Truth be told a large number of users of this type lock still rely on their folder and use it even after some clicking movement is noted for vertical blade play because although a general nuisance to put up with for some, it really does not automatically mean the lock is any easier to defeat or that you can't use the folder. I've seen a lot of knives of this type sent to me in my shop and compression locks too for that matter as well as frame locks in both lock types and many of them ship to me with some up and down play in the blades for users knives. The little bit of play never stopped them from doing most cutting jobs they use their knives for daily. When the knives are used hard of this lock type the locks will wear quicker but again its the design of the lock to begin self correction from the first time its used to the last. Personally its probably more reliable all the way across there like that then it ever was with an earlier lock up. Not always as some can slide toward release easier after a certain amount of movement inward but most are locked up pretty solidly once the lock works its way in there good like yours. I'd use it and be happy about it until it begins to show signs of up and down play in the blade. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

That is a Horseman, I had only had it out of the box for maybe an hour when I took this pic, the lock has since migrated more to the middle when it locks up:thumbup:

Virtually no blade play up or down, left or right. Lock up is still very solid and the knife is silky smooth as far as opening and closing. Have you taken your apart and inspected it?

This is why I no longer buy EKI products. The inconsistency of their locks is inexcusable in a premium folder.
I have three Combative Edge M1s, one a nearly year-old EDC, and ALL three show consistent, reliable lock-up, and NO failure.

i have had literally dozens of emersons which have exhibited consistent, reliable lock up with no failures, so i dont know about that.

I wasn't trying call EKI's fit and finish into question, I just noticed the lock on my particular knife had moved over quite a bit and just wondered if this was a "bad" thing. Like I said before it doesn't bother me, and the lock up is still solid. Thanks

The only Emerson I've had any difficulty with so far as the blade and lockup was a CQC-14. I found a little pressure on the spine would allow the liner lock to slip sideways and the blade to close. After snapping it open several times, that problem disappeared.

I want a banana seat for my bicycle.

(My Emersons have never shifted, as some people describe theirs doing... As for the OP, you're fine. That lock is perfectly secure. Don't worry about it unless it moves all the way across AND starts allowing vertical play. As killa_concept said, I'd be more concerned about the one on the far left disengaging during use.)
