Hi, I'm pretty new to knives and I received some advice that liner locks are sometimes considered less reliable than other kind of locks especially in sd use. I'd like to hear more people weigh in on this issue? Are liner locks less reliable? If so, how much less? Are there any especially bad / good models as liner locks go? Many thanks for your advice.

no biggie, a search will turn up tons of results for you. Actually, with the wonky search function, trying to research liner locks will probably overload it and you'll get nothing.

But it's a pretty even split on those untrustworthy who've been bitten by a failure or worry of one and those who swear by em.

Search results for "Liner lock" on bladeforums.com.

If you prefer a different query, just type into google "SOMETHING site:bladeforums.com" where SOMETHING is what you're searching for, and no quotes of course......

As for my opinion, liner locks are like most things in life, if you spend a little cash, they're good, but if you're looking at the cheapies, you get what you pay for.

Wow... that truly is one massive can of worms. I'll quitely look for myself for awhile now and try not to stir up any more potential hornets nests. Thanks for the links.

I'm gonna chime in on this one. A few years ago I had some linerlocks in my small collection and liked them very much light, simple, easy to open and close, and made a cool sound when they clicked open. I don't use folders for fixed blade work so they were all plenty strong for me. Than I started to read all the bad posts on liner locks, got worried I was gonna chop all my fingers off when the locks started failing, and sold them all! Sometime later I handled a Spyderco Military(linerlock) and was so impressed with everything about that knife, including the nested linerlock I had to have one. I've use this knife all the time for hunting, fishing, and camping and its been flawless. I also EDC a BM 910 (another great knife) I recommend linerlocks made by Spyderco or Benchmade without any hesitation just like with any folder make sure you check the lockup with some moderate spinewacks. Good luck.

A well made linerlock is a good knife, a poorly made linerlock is a bad knife. It is that simple.
