Hello eveyone. My liner is at about the 75% point and I'm getting worrrried. It progresses to the right side quite rapidly over time. Can I get new blade or liner installed? will it develope play?

Yea, the Emerson linerlocks are crappy. Get it to STR for a framelock conversion. I won't buy another Emerson until they start making framelocks again. The HD7 has been back ordered for years.

All Emersons are liner locks, except for a couple FB and FL.
I had no idea I was carrying crappy knives. Thanks for letting me know that.

Hmmm...what to say to a person that comes into a forum hosted by Emerson, only to declare that Emerson's design is "crappy"? Oh yes, I know the word - Troll!

I am not the original owner of the knife so I bet EKI cannot help me out. As for STR..What is it?? I have heard that name pop around a few times on the forums. Where can I contact him and how much $$???

You may try tightening all securing screws.

I have an older Emerson that saw more use than most of my knives. The liner was getting over and I thought it was getting worn. I took it all apart and cleaned it. Put it back together and tightened it all down good...right back to where it was when I bought it. Maybe coincidental, but it is worth a shot.

I'm talking about their linerlocking mechanisms!!! Not the company!! If you look at any Emerson customs, he uses a locking liner that's twice as thick...now why would he do that if the regular locks on the production folders are up to his specs. I think the accountants took over the company and made the decision instead of Ernest...

I love the Emerson design and concept...but I'm saddened by how much its been diluted from concept to production.

ive carried emerson's for years, and know others who have too.

never had a liner fail on me. his liner locks are of similar thickness to most other brands i have.

yes, the customs tend to have thicker liners, but that does not mean the production liners are crap. think before you post.

Then buy a custom, and stop bashing Emersons production folders on his own forum. Most of us are here because we like them. We also cannot all afford to buy a custom either. In fact there are also many who prefer the liner lock Emersons over the FL ones.

What reason do you have to come here and do this? Not good. :thumbdn:

The thickness of the liner is not actually that big a deal. For a lock its far more
important that it is fitted properly that how fat the materials are.
Liner locks will still give a solid lock up all the way to 100%, after that it will develop blade play.
There is also other options for a fix but they will probably void your warranty
(that they would fix the knife under any way.)

really? and this is based on what, your opinion? how many emersons have you owned? how long have you been carrying EKI? what models? what makes your opinion relevant or a fact? i dont mean to be an ass but how are you an expert on locks and qualified to say they are crap?

i would wager i have had more EKI's than you, have been carrying them longer & using them harder and i am far from an expert but i know they are a long country mile from "crappy".

ANY lock by ANY maker can fail, ANY maker can and will have defects, does that make them all "crappy" i had a defective SS spyderco ATR with the compression lock, does that make the compression lock "crappy"? of course not.

if you wave the knife a lot, or inertia it a lot the liner lock can go outta adjustment, if that happens send it in to EKI and they will fix it, i have a bud with a commander made in '99 which goes about 3/4 or so across and the lock up is still fine and this knife is used HARD my bud works construction, its been inertia'd or waved virtually every last time its been opened and cut tar paper, opened paint cans, pried out nails, etc, and it is still going strong, my bud brings it by every few weeks and i sharpen and lube it and its good to go, its 10 yrs old now FWIW, not bad for "crap" imho.

what are you talking about?

you do understand that almost all the emerson customs (which are the prototypes more or less of the productions) are liner locks dont you?

FWIW the thickness of the liner really has very little to do with the strength of the lock, its how ell its designed and fitted, a good example is the spyderco millie, a very thin liner lock but ya rarely hear of problems with it, and plenty of emerson customs have the thinner liner i had an '8 with the thin liner and it locked up fine.

and it matters not if ya are the original owner or not EKI will fix the knife for you if its not locking up right they have a great warranty.

I can attest to the millie. Yes, it has a thin liner, but still locks up good. Zero blade play in any direction whatsoever. Even when I use it hard, the lock doesn't fail. I guess it's the same with EKI.
