Today, I called Warranty and Repair to let them know that I'm still having some issues with the linerlock on my Military, even though they had replaced the liner a couple of weeks ago. The blade seems to have slight play right around the pivot/liner area, in fact, you can sometimes even actually see the liner rubbing slightly back and forth where it makes contact with the blade.

What is so strange is that the lock doesn't behave this way all the time....sometimes it locks solid, sometimes not.

The lock has not failed when I've done some spine whack tests on it, but just the knowledge that the blade occasionally has this play, when in the locked position, really has me concerned about possible lock failure.

When I called and talked to one of the individuals in W&R, I was told that because it was a production knife, NOT a custom, that some play was acceptable.....on a linerlock!!!

I explained that a linerlock should not have any play, whereas a lockback usually does have slight play because of its' design. She seemed a little frustrated with me, as if I should believe, and accept, what she is teling me about the linerlock. Her remarks were to simply send the Millie back and they would look at it again. Her last comment was; "even if we replace the liner again, there is no guarantee that the knife won't have any play".

What??!!?

I know that Spyderco will make it right, they always have in past concerns, but I was not pleased with the slight attitude that I received today. I only hope that they are able to fix whatever the problem may be with my Military(my FOURTH Millie, BTW) and this Spydie will ride in my pocket like it once did.

For now, I'll just carry my Manix...

Play in a liner lock is not acceptable; custom or otherwise.

I have 2 Militarys and they both lock up fine.

I'm sure Spyderco will make this right. Some of the people they have answering the phone are more knowledgable than others. ;)

I know you're right, EZ. I know that Spyderco will make it right, either by fixing this one or just replacing this Millie with another. I've had more Millies than any other Spyder and all of them have locked up solidly, this one was just as solid, until it developed this problem.

agreed, not acceptable. definitely when it comes to the military, it's one of those knives you want a super-perfect fit on that liner. i've fine-tuned my oler mili with the eccentric pivot, and also my latest s30v-mili. everytime i handle a mili, i get out the allen-driver, the loctite and a shetload of patience and fiddling. liner spring-tension is also important on liner-locks for a proper fit. but you said they already had replaced the liner earlier. hmm, then it could also be that the handle itself has a fitting-problem on its inside

d

*liner-locks and blade-play don't go well together*

Not really sure, Dennis. Oh well.....

I just got back from the post office.....mailed the Millie back to W&R for a second time.

I don't like to beat around the bush, so I asked nicely for a replacement Millie to be sent to me instead. I'm not sure what will happen though.

Spyderco has taken care of my concerns a couple of times in the past, so I hope that this time won't be any different.

Mongo, that's what I don't understand. This is a S30V version that I've had maybe a little over a year and I never had problems with it until now.

is that like saying, it's a production knife, what do you expect?

maybe they should offer you a replacement?

hi shadow, i too own a couple of millies. one an early cpm440v developed a problem with the lock. i had called spyderco and told them while cutting heavy cardboard i felt the lock moving back and forth. upon closer look when i put hand pressure on the spine the lock moved. they told me to send it back and i did. i got it back three weeks later with a note that said they were glad i used the knife as much as i did and they resharpened the blade and adjusted the lock to the best of their ability. the lock did the same thing as before. wanting a s30-v bladed military anyway , and because spyderco can do no wrong in my eyes i bought a new military. loved the knife until the lock began to shift enough to make me loose confidence . the knife is too sharp to risk a lock failure.i am now carryingt my lock back pro-venenator until i try out a para with the compression lock. hi

my paramilitary has ZERO blade play but my Manix has some slight verical play... One note. This is my second paraM, the lock of the 1st one was opening after a slight tap on the spine and I returned it.

Oh dear, another Zombie thread dug up from the grave and given some fresh air.;)

This should spark a nice debate on acceptable blade play, and I doubt anyone will take note of the DATE this thread was posted.:p

LOL....why did you bring up a thread that's over a year old? :foot:

He recently made a thread about blade play on his Manix. I'm guessing that he clicked the link provided to him and found this thread.

Mine does it too. I sent it back and it was fixed for a month. I gave up.. I don't think it is possible for the knife to keep zero blade play if used daily. I think g10 stretches/wears and causes it or something. Mine doesn't have the eccentric pivot.
