Hey, can anyone tell me if the liners of the Benchmade 550/551 series are full length? Or is the design modular, like the 720/721/722/94X series? It looks like there is steel (in the pictures) back where the screws for the clip go. But are those inserts, or the liners themselves?

Anyone?

Thanks.

Thanks Easyrider. Do you have one? If so, how do you like the steel?

Rockspyder, the liners actually extend further down the handle than the 940, but they are they nested type liner. As far as the blade steel is concerned, I'm happy with it. It takes a really sharp aggressive edge and is fairly easy to sharpen. I can't really comment on edge holding because I don't really use it hard, just opening mail, etc.

Thanks Kutch. I'm thinking of getting the new 551, although I'm disappointed it doesn't have the "egg" hole. I really like the shape of the blade, and the price. Not like I need it I suppose; my fetish for the axis lock has me already owning 6.

OK, now that I have received my Griptilian 551, I have another question: Does everyone else's 550 or 551 have a stonewashed blade???? Yep, mine looks like the blade has been stonewashed. It's really cool. I didn't realize when I ordered it that it was supposed to be stonewashed (if it is). And the blade shape is awesome. Nice point, and nice and broad. It seems that the included angle of the secondard bevel is less than any of my other Benchmades, I guess because the grind extends fairly high in comparison. I'm liking it. And the 440C seems to be pretty toothy so far. Now I'm contemplating getting the mini-Grip'. It should make a great, inexpensive every day pocket carry knife. I'm glad I took the plunge!

My 550's blade appears "satin stonewashed," if that makes any sense. I like it a lot. In fact, I like the job BM has done on the 440C steel. Although I haven't yet used mine "hard," I do use it a lot currently, and am still using the factory edge, which came extremely sharp. Also the 440C blade seems very corrosion resistant.

I'm also planning to get a 551 eventually.

I could see the humor in getting the entire 55x series of axis locks. And not only is the blade awesome (so far, like you said), the handle shape is really comfortable for me. Even if it IS "plastic", I think BM scored a run with this one.

Now... if they'll just get on the ball shipping out 806D2's!

I got my 551 today. I may be in the minority but I like it better than the 550. I dont mind the thumbstuds and like the blade shape much better.

The 55X series offers incredible value. You get a good blade steel, ergonomic design, and the axis lock.

The 551 will be my new designated beater knife.

WE may be in the minority, Dennis, but I'm definitely with you. I'd definitely prefer the 551's blade shape in a mini, but the overall design is so good, the 555 as is would be good enough.
