I have lined my forge with wool & satanite.

I let it dry for a solid day out in the sun. It's a little "crunchy". What's it supposed to be like?

I couldn't find any instructions on how to apply it.....just took a shot in the dark.

Does it need to be "heat cured"?

Do I need more "coats" of satanite?

(I do plan on adding a thin firebrick inside once I have the satanite done)

on mine after i coated it with " Mud " i waited a couple of day's the " Mud" had the Consistancy of spackle so i smeared the stuff all over the Kao-wool that i put in before . the "Mud " dries pretty hard if you put enough on i think id put another coat or 2 on it before i fire it if i was you . you can never have enough type of thing .hope this help's ya

Hi Dan, It's about time! :) :D :p

I thought I had emailed you the instructions!? If not, please accept my apology! I'll fire them off in an email in a few minutes...

As I mentioned in that video, make sure the doors are dry and cured as well as the outer edges of the inner liner before closing the door up...otherwise they'll stick together...

:)

I just thin mine down with water till its simular to a heavy cream and then paint it on. It will air dry fairly fast that way but if I'm in a hurry I'll fire the forge up.

Dan, what is your forge made from? I'm going to build one for heat treating. Need it to do blades up to 10" long.

Darren, did I hear video? Is this something you may sell publicly? I, for one, would immediately purchase a quality video on forge/burner construction techniques.

Hi John,

A video is in the future...unfortunatly, not the immediate future... I made a poorly shot home video for Dan since he doesn't have anyone near him on how to fire up his forge...trust me it wasn't a good video at all...here I am holding the camera in one hand and trying to do everything with the other hand and making it all up on the fly...I just wanted to get the info to him... It's almost embarrassing for me to watch it...Dan, don't you dare share that video with anybody! :D I'll probably be putting something together that is much better to ship with the forges I sell when I get caught up on orders... then, if all goes well, sometime this Summer, I'll make a comprehensive video that covers everything...

:)

Darren can you put some plastic wrap on the door then close it and let it
mold itself to the forge for a tighter adjusted fit

just a thought?

Hmm, that sounds like it might be a great idea Dan! I've not tried it before, but it certainly might work...cover both sides with plastic wrap, close the door and let it sit for a bit to mold to shape and then open it back up and heat cure it...I like the sound of that...now, why didn't I think of that! :) Gotta love the forums...all you old dogs teaching us young pups new tricks... :) :D :D

I just built a forge and I am using clay it never sems to get hot enough and the forge weighs a ton. Is the cement vey heavy or is it a light mix cement.

By the waythe tool boxes in the back are sweet.

Did you just use a thick wall of clay? If so, that might take a long time to get up to heat as its going to suck up a lot of heat at first.

Thanks - I love 'em.......but don't get too excited...:D....they're just chinese knock-offs of the real thing - Gerstner's

I went ahead and ordered some Bubble Alumina from Darren - Thanks!

I'll coat it again tonight/tomorrow (depending if it's still raining) and then put on the alumina Thu/Fri. Should be ready to fire up by Sat.

DanG - I'll try the plastic wrap thing.....it'll burn off, right?

About the "heat cure".....does this need to be done immediately, or can it wait until I fire it up for the first time?

I don't know for sure but I think I'd go ahead and fire it once before I put too much more on. That way there's less chance of the kaowool starting to sag on you. If you get too much on before its hardened up real good it might buckle.
