I'm getting ready to buy the pump and motor for one of the hydraulic presses and I was wondering if they make a bracket for lining an electric motor up to the pump. I found some for gas engines at Northern tool, and the coupling heads at Surplus Center, but wasn't sure how I should go about mounting them (probably won't attach it to the press).

The coupling between the motor and pump is called a "Love Joy" connector. It has a hard rubber insert for cushion. They sell them in Northern catalog in the pump section if I remember correctly.

I made my own bracket for the pump. It wasnt that hard really.

Love joy. That is oddly fitting I guess. :D

Thank you very much!

You still need to get the 2 shafts fairly well aligned, The closer you get to perfect the longer your coupling will last and the better it is for your bearings. Doing it with a bracket like above should make it fairly easy to get it close enough.

I'll second that! A few years ago my press started shredding "spiders" (the rubber star shaped insert that goes in the Lovejoy couplers). What I finally discovered was that my pump bracket was slightly bent....it wasn't much, but over a two week period I went through 4 of the "spiders". After some cutting/rewelding I managed to get things back in line and things have been good ever since. I found that the closer you can align the pump and motor, the less troubles you'll have.

If you go with a bracket like above make the motors holes a bit big and then and the pump a bit high. Then you can shim the motor up level and the correct height and move it around a bit to get it square and in line side to side. A dial indicator mounted on one of the couplings and riding against the other as the shaft is turned is the preferred method for true accuracy

Michael, if your motor has a "C" face there is an adaptor available at Grainger to bolt everthing right up. If not, you may be able to change the face out for one. check w/ motor manf. this was ALOT easier for me to mount everything up. You still need the lovejoy coupler as Bruce said between the two. I'll try and find the PN for the coupler. Shawn

That would be nice -- I haven't bought my motor yet so that is definitely something I'll look for.
