I'm still wet behind the ears around here. I just got my 18" AK villager this past week and already dinged a rock. In trying to align the blade and make it pretty, I've run into a number of questions that I've tried to answer by reading the forums here.

I don't know much about sharpening and all that, and when you guys, in your infinite wisdom, relate tales of using tool x and tool y to do task z, the terms and names all sound like greek to me. So I thought I'd ask for someone to give me a little help in identifying all the mysterios implements and techniques you guys refer to when sharpening or cleaning up a blade.

I was hoping someone with a little time on their hands could create a sort of list for a toolbox full of devices to use in sharpening. The extra work would come in not just listing the parts I should get, but linking to a website that shows what the tool looks like and maybe even tells what it does or how to use it. If there is a FAQ that does this, a link would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

hey there, wldmn

I personally don't have the know-how to pull up links on what to get or where to get them. However, i think that if you search the forums you'll find more than enough information to repair you damaged blade. Being both poor as well as lazy, I use only a few tools on my Khuks and I can get them sharp enough to shave hair. A basic list of my tool kit for my khuks is: A chakma, a fine file, a medium puck stone, a fine stone, a medium arkansas stone, a butchers steel, and an old leather bealt for stropping. i'm sure the sharpening experts will be along to help sooner than later. Good luck:)

Aside from my power equipment for use at home, I have a field kit that works for me.

1. Two sided diamond plate ($14)
2. Short ceramic stick ($1)
3. Six inch scrap of an old leather belt (free and it's *Harley*!)
4. Some compound for the belt (not really needed, the leather alone will work)

It all fits in a shirt pocket and will bring up a paper cutting, almost (for me and I'm not good at it) shaving razor sharp edge. Not bad for $15 :D

All available at Ragweed Forge

I'm not allowed to post in the useful tips and tricks thread at the top of the forum list, but there's probably some good stuff in there, even if a lot of it has nothing to do with sharpening.
