I have been looking for a sites which describe and explain the various traditional slipjoint patterns, eg. congress, trapper, canoe, etc. I think I know them all by name, but I would like to learn how/where each pattern developed, what they were used for, and why particular blade designs became associated with certain patterns.

For example, why would a "spey" blade be useful on a "Trapper?" I doubt trappers were castrating the animals they caught in their leg hold traps! I wonder if the spey blade was a good skinning blade for small furred animals and that is why you see them on the Trapper pattern.

Any suggestions for where I can find this information, especially online?

Thanks

Try A.G. Russell's website (www.agrussell.com), click on the Knife Encyclopedia. It's got good info on different blade shapes, although I don't agree with the claim that screwdriver/caplifters are a rare sight these days. Most of the scout knives have them, and a few thousand SAKs a day come out of the factory with one of those as well. I did learn about a lot of blade shapes I didn't know, like the corn blade.

www.allaboutpocketknives.com is another nice place filled with info. Just click here: http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/research/knife_definitions.php
