Yes, it's deal spotting.

Forum rules:
No deal spotting
Yes, we know you found a great price on the Ninja Disembowel 4000 at SuperPriceMART. We don't care. We'd prefer you support the dealers who support BladeForums.com.

As such, we don't allow deal spotting because otherwise the forums would be a quagmire of "deals" (real or imagined) posted everywhere, or unscrupulous people posting "deals" for non paying dealers. So don't do it.

Forum rules on how to NOT get banned:How to not get banned from BladeForums.com - Quick and dirty rules.
This site's been open since late 1998, so we've seen quite a range of behaviors here... but by and large our membership has been self policing and well behaved. We'd like to keep it that way, as such, here are some helpful guidelines on how you should act while you are here. This isn't the complete list, so be sure to read the FAQ thoroughly - ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the rules.

No deal spotting, spam, or other similar behavior. Seriously, show respect for the people who help keep this place open.

And finally:
RevDevil - Yesterday 11:57 PM Report
Thomas, you are not allowed to post a live link to an ebay auction. I understand you want to discuss the item in question, please do so without posting an actual link that takes people to ebay. Copy and upload the iages to photobucket or something. Please edit your link as some people might get the wrong impression, the sooner the better.

So according to Spark, it's a no-no, an insta-ban offense and ignorance is no defense.
RevDevil told you to change it, the FAQ is right here in tech support.

I'm on a couple different forums, and I posted the rules just to make sure that they are applied here, and that I wasn't getting confused.

It's exactly deal spotting. You're basically advertising for someone, using this entire place as an audience. As I suggested to you, if you want to discuss fakes, upload the images independently. Were you under the impression I was joking, along with the other members that asked you to take the link down?

At times we do allow links for purposes of discussion in the general forums.
Certain forums such as Bernard Levines forum and the Feedback forum are allowed links.
Links to the actual manufacturer are allowed, but as a general rule we do not allow linking to offsite dealers and vendors as a matter of course. Ebay links are frowned upon and almost never allowed. It is better to just post the picture and description, if needed for discussion, into the thread itself rather than linking directly to the sale.

This infraction can be issued as a warning and is worth 10 points towards your total. It expires in 12 months.

I spend most time at Bernard's place. But live eprey links appear regularly in the General forum

A link that denounces an item as laughable trash does not seem like "deal spotting" to a good many of us insignificant types. More like "knock-off/fraud spotting." So I did not think it was a "no no." More like a "WHAT?"

I was not arguing with a mod and changed the post when I found his PM.

If you want a rule against live ebay links, how about writing one? Seriously.

Thank you for your time.

While some links do appear, it's mostly by newer members with few little time here and even less posts. As Karda already pointed out, the FAQ section explains in general terms what deal spotting is. Sure it could be more r e fined and exacting, but then again it's an open place and we like it that way.

I never thought of Bernard in that way. 0___0

Respectfully, a vague rule does not give notice of what conduct is proscribed. Moreover, a severe penalty ("insta-ban") for "violating" a vague rule is poor policy. Ex post facto enforcement of indefinite standards of conduct creates disrespect for rules in general.

Yes. And if I had done that, shame on me.

Deal Spotting isnt an automatically bannable offense. I quoted the policy above.

In addition having 2 moderators explain the rule should be more than sufficient to quell any further doubts you might have, let us hope.

So posting links to live ePrey auctions is sometimes a violation of the rules as "deal spotting" - regardless of the purpose of effect of the citation. And sometimes it's not. ("At times we do allow links for purposes of discussion in the general forums.")

And posting links to dead auctions, which lead to ePrey pages with links to live auctions, is perhaps against the rules - or not.

As clear as mud.

Just read a thread denouncing a fake with a link that leads to links to 50 live auctions. Doesn't look like "deal spotting" to me, but what do I know.

Don't link to eBay, sportsmans guide, Craigslist, etc.

Now if that was just in the rule on the rules page huh? :)

Would you like a list of every site you're not allowed to link to? You're not getting one because it would be impossible to maintain. That's why the rule isn't specific. :p Mods make decisions based on the written and sometimes unwritten rules and judgement calls based on a guess as to the poster's intent. Common sense rules the day most times for poster's and mods.

About eBay I am now very sure.

"Undecided" has no application.

As to the rest, I have to be unsure when I am subject to unwritten -- and otherwise unpublished rules. I guess we know after we are pranged for violating the unwritten rules. I note that even the mods sometimes disagree.

But since the best way to make God laugh is to make plans, uncertainty is part of life.
