A friend gave me an old laptop so that I can play around with one of the above mentioned OSs. It's a PIII with 256 RAM, so from what I've read it should work. Being an OS moron though it seems as though I need some step by step directions on what how to do this. The only Windows program I would like to salvage from is Word, but even that's not that important.

ubuntu's website has some wonderful documentation on it that could probably answer any questions you might have.

but really with ubuntu installing it is as easy as windows if you aren't dual booting or doing anything fancy , just boot from the cd and go.

as far as word, you could use it via wine or crossoveroffice but the easier thing would be to use openoffice

Read through the ubuntu documentation for a bit to find out what distribution you need. Laptops are notoriously difficult to get Linux installed due to the proprietary hardware, but it can be fun playing!

Check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/ for an idea on which version of Linux will work "best" for your 'top.

Borders Books stores sell a few good Ubuntu books. Suggest you buy one or check your local library.
