"finally met his maker in a hail of bullets and arrows from police and villagers"

LOL!!1

I wonder what caliber/s they were using...

I'd use one of my 16" WWII's...

duct taped to my rem 870's magazine tube & barrel.. :p

From the safari stories I have read, shotguns have a bad record against lion. Most hunters want a big game (one of the nitro express) rifle with softs. Capstick has a story of a lion taking over 5 hits from big game rifles before going down. I have read similar stories from other hunters. When they get pumped up with adrenaline they can take unreal amounts of damage before going down. They are like half ton PCP users with claws and fangs.

Yea I know, but I only have a shotgun right now. :(

Maybe a slug that penetrates well would work.

I hear that sometimes you're suppose to let them in close.. so your one shot will more likely hit the brain, but that is A LOT easier said than done!!11

You really only have one shot if he's really coming at you..

I also hear that he usually gives out a roar before a charge. and he doesn't come at you straight on until very close but zig zags through the thick grass..

Scares me more than any fictional movie monster.

I dunno, kukris are for bear hunting... lions require spears :)
I have a "Real" Masai spear.:D
And a "Real" Masai sword as well.:D

...and, about a 200 yard shot. But, at close range a shotgun would do a whole lot of damage. It depends on who is hunting who and how much room and how much visibility you have.

With the new developments in shotgun ammo, things may be different. Most of the books I have read are 10 years old at least, some much older. Maybe a sabot slug would do well. I would go with the tried and true myself. I don't want to be the guinea pig who was lunch. A lot of African hunting stories end with a charge; and you either hang in the pocket and make the crucial shot or get creamed.

video: lion attack caught on video. If the lion had not been wounded during the first shot, the hunter would have been less one head. Fortunately, the lions right shoulder does not seem to be working.

Any second thoughts on which K to use?

I remember reading in one of the outdoor magazines regarding hunters hunting lions in Africa. The writer commented many have killed 8 or 10 elephant, cape buffalo. But no one has killed more than a few lions or leopards before they are killed themselves. I guess the distance when you shoot has something to do with it. It might have been Capstick who said it.

Yvsa,

A male lion is HUGE when seen up close.

The Masai warriors are far braver than I am; I'd never have the nerve to get near a lion with a 6 foot spear and a short sword.

They are very admirable people and true warriors in the best sense of the word.

I dunno if it's THAT dangerous. Hunting them from a blind or killing them unawares is pretty straight foward. Given proper shot placement, they are pretty "soft" thin skinned animals that are especially vunerable to high velocity bullets (big cats hate hydrostatic shock) It is when they are wounded that really sucks...

According to old hunters and my African shot placement books. Their hearts are quite far back, not where you would think it is.

Either that, or they were very very very hungry.

This is a 19th century Masai sword

Who is Capstick? Google had a lot of folks named Capstick. There used to be Suzy Capstick who used to advertize lip balm though. I doubt she was the type to shoot lions though. :)

You mean there is not one full auto AK in that country?

Tons of AKs there, a bit Trippy. Heck, even an AK on their national flag.

But personally, I'd rather have something a lot bigger than 123gr 7.62, especially FMJs, if I was going after a Lion. Especially as if it killed 14, definitely no thoughts of it being scared of humans.
