Liong Mah Question!

Hi everyone,

In the ongoing search for the “best UK EDC”, I’ve been really keen to pick up the traveller from Liong Mah.

Quick question to you knowledgable folk.... How does it work with Liong Mah? Are they on a limited run each time and once they are gone, that’s it forever?

Or are there models that are ongoing?

Lastly, not seen much on the traveller, as I appreciate it isn’t to everyone’s tastes (very expensive for a non locking, small ish knife).

But for the UK, it looks almost perfect.

He has models that are made for multiple runs, and does updates to popular models.

Ah good to know!

Not sure how poplar the traveller has been, so might just pick one up now whilst it’s available.

At that price, it doesn’t seem to tick many boxes for people.

To answer your question about why its not well talked about. I think the knife community like bladeforums and reddit is majority US based and only a handful of places don't allow locking knives. As such, slip joints and non-locking knives usually don't get a super amount of press on these forums.

Yeah, completely understandable.

The few topics I do see on slipjoints, usually end in “I can get X,Y and Z all cheaper than “insert slip joint here”).

Do you know roughly how many pieces are made on the Liong Mah Designs runs? Or does it vary by model.

I would have thought the Traveller would have been super popular/sought after in Europe (and other restrictive places).

But then again.... It ain’t cheap!

Spoke to Liong.

He said that around 40 of each type were made, and he had no more plans to make another "UK Friendly" knife.

Given that..... I had to snap one up!

Yeah, just wanted to add that even when Liong does multiple runs of the same design it seems that they're eventually retired. The Warrior has been brought back in a few different iterations but some of the older models like the Remedy and the Slim Daily Carry were one-and-dones. If I see a Liong that I want, I usually grab it. Even if a knife gets a second run, it may be with changes or materials that you don't prefer.

Good luck, the Traveler is a sweet looking knife.

I'll be completely honest.... I wasn't looking to spend this kind of money.

I'd looked at the usual contenders for UK EDC (I already have an old FRN UKPK).

I ended up buying the MKM Root and Viper Dan (both Dans had issues and the Root had an extremely sharp bit of titanium which is apparently the design).

In the end, it was between one of the Dans and going all out for arguably the "best" UK EDC in the Traveller.

I'm not a collector, and in the UK, we don't have the luxury of a huge portion of the knife market (although there are still plenty of UK friendly knives).

I just figured..... Might as well spend the money on something very good!

You might take a look at the Kizer Helbig pinch folder. It's no Liong Mah but it's an interesting looking slipjoint at a fraction of the price of a Traveller.

I've never handled an Artisan Cutlery but the Biome looks like a cool slip joint

You mentioned trying an MKM but the Fara looks kinda neat

Just a few cheaper options to look at.

Thanks mate!

The Kizer has a blade length of over 3" (just.... like.... so so tiny!)

The blame isn't widely available in the UK, and I'm not a fan of the design.

I looked at the Fara, but again, not in love with the design.

I prefer the shorter/fatter EDC knifes, rather than the slimline ones.

Plus, and this was a big deciding factor.... Finger choil......

IMO, absolutely needed for a non locking knife. I'm not an idiot, and I'm sure I'd be fine, but it doesn't half give you some extra peace of mind when you have a choil.
