I was in the kitchen tonight when my cattle dog just went nuts!! The wife yelled something big just went through the front yard . So out the door I went, didn't see anything in the front of the house so went around the side of the house, and saw something dark colored that to me looked at first like some one wearing dark clothes and bent over so I yelled can I help you? well instead of standing up it just turned around and I found myself facing the biggest Black Bear I had ever seen  ! Before I even thought I grabbed my edc belt knife that I bought from Mr Drew a while back, It occurred to me at that moment that I was trying to face down a big black bear with a knife that had a 3.5 inch blade. At that point I just started yelling and he turned and ran down to the woods and I turned a ran in the house for the night. Has anyone else here found themselves in stupid situations where you were under armed and how did it turn out?

I always keep an Esee 4 on me, but even in this case I may be under armed for that.

However, the Esee keeps me up to par with whatever knife duty I'll need. If I'm out in the woods, the BK9 would be the same. I'd have to be getting out of the shower to be under armed.

Back in early 06, I was a passenger in a car that got pulled over. Not any normal traffick stop... More like 7-10 Fresno Sheriffs cars with approx 30 personell pointing shotguns or ARs at us telling us to walk backward to the sound of the bullhorn.

Quite a few times actually!

I have been nose to nose with wild buffalo (no fences or cages. They can be sneaky and quiet when they want).

I have been chased off a dock by a brown bear. I dove off on end of the T, and swam underwater for about 15 feet and surfaced as quietly as I could under the next dock. That brown bear sure did look puzzled! The neighbor had to kill that one with his compound bow in the yard. No gun, because I was just a kid, and swimming.

I have been forced back into the old FJ40 by a small year old brown bear. He tried to climb in the back with me, then tried to climb in the front passenger window with my mom!

I incline toward your idea.

Last summer I heard noises that sounded like the neighbors dog, but the panting sound was bigger than that of a dog when I relized that it was a Black bear defending the left overs I had tossed the evening before. He growled at me once I discovered that it was indeed a bear, I could feel the hair standing on my back. My hand instinctively went for the fixed blade on my belt while I growled back at the bear, then yelling while I very carefully backed up towards the house. I observed him from the safety of the deck, he looked about 300 lbs. He held his ground until he finished his treats. No more feeding the tamed skunk after that for awhile.

You are better off than some people man, don't under estimate your 3.5 in knife. There was a Man in colorado that came face to face with a grizzly and had nothing so he forced his fist into the bears mouth and suffocated it to death. There was also a woman who was walking with her kids and was found in a similar situation not too long ago and choked the bear to death haha. So in your case id say your chances were good as long as you fight ferociously.
