Lionsteel SR-1 Review

I have one and absolutely love it---many friends who are not knife people have noticed that the handle is one solid piece, and then are amazed that it's titanium. Of course, inevitably, the conversation then progresses to...

"Where can I get one?"
"_________ has them."
"What do they run?"
"High 300s to low 400s depending where y--"
"HOLY CRAP! For a knife?!?! I was thinking like $80 or so!"
"You thought you were going to get the huge block of machined titanium you were just salivating over for $80? You do know that just the material itself, pre-milling, would cost more than that, right?"
".................."

Some of these people own mutli-thousand dollar watches. To each his own...

Ahhh, yes.....the charming innocence of those not aware of the price of fine steel:D:D Surely you didn't expect those inexperienced friends of yours to shrug off a $400.00 price tag?:p Of course they think we're nuts! Hell, we probably are nuts, but it sure is nice to have and enjoy some high end cutlery isn't it?;)

same kind of guys who buy million dollar properties then solicit for free legal advice....

Sorry but that's not how you cut Toilet paper....

Short review though. Maybe next time we will see demonstrations of the Rotoblock and the pocket clip

Thank you

it's hard to get any time with 3 kids flying around the place so I apologise for the brevity of the review. I plan to do another review - say in about a month with some thoughts focussed on how it fairs as a user and will also try show how the practical the features actually are !

Thanks for watching

Thanks for taking the time to blow the dust off the camcorder and post video reviews.

I know I rely on these heavily before making most knife purchases.

I'm envious that even with children you find the time.

I really like the looks of the SR-1, but am holding for now. There is a lot that intrigues me about the knife. Based on the dimensions, I think the handle of the knife will be too small for me.

Also - some say the scales are slippery. I use my knives mostly outdoors around my property, and my hands are either sweaty or wet from snow/rain.

Maybe there will be a pass-around in the near future.

Only a pleasure mate. It was taken on my iPhone so wasn't an inconvenience at all. I reckon the handle will be big enough for most (my hands aren't small and it fits perfect). It is quite slippy so that might be something to consider. When I do my next review I will wet my hands midway through and see how it effects the grip !!

Oh no, I don't expect them to shrug it off--I just grow weary of the same dance. If, just once, somebody bypassed incredulous scorn and said, "do they take all credit cards?" the sheer unexpectedness of it would thrill me. :D

As to the handles---yes they are a bit slick. I would recommend making use of the provided lanyard hole, and make yourself a pinky-lanyard. A loop just big enough to get your little finger through will not get in your (or the blade's) way, anchors you to the knife, and won't allow you to slip up onto the blade. I use pinky lanyards on everything from folders to big bowies--I've really never seen any point to a big lanyard that goes around your wrist. I mean, sure, it might prevent the knife from flying away from you if you lose your grip but then you have an incredibly sharp pendulum swinging from your arm. I like a lanyard that keeps the knife in my hand. :)

Nice job on the review Brendan. Those SR-1s are damn nice. I am looking for my next edc and was looking to go the custom route, nothing to crazy mind you. This may be the one. Thank you sir.

thanks guys, nearly a week into owning the knife - here are some thoughts.

You can't really get away with carrying this knife in your pocket in normal day to day situations. I'm an IT professional and I don't feel comfortable carrying this monster in my work getup. Might be a different story if jeans/cargos is your work wear though. It's very heavy too and my father-in-law (also a knife nut) has been teasing me that it's going to pul my pants down. It feels like it's the Hulk's folder or something !

I cannot open the knife one-handed with my right hand. No problem opening with the left which completely confuses me - cant put it down to anything really. Weird. One handed closing is.. well - dangerous. This is the sharpest knife I have ever owned - it will cut you if you look at it wrong !

I'm going to test the cutting abilities this weekend. I've got a project to build a climbing frame for my kids out of bamboo and I plan to do a video review. Going to chop the bamboo down with my Busse and use the SR-1 to do all the other work.

Outrageous:eek:.

For a knife its size, this knife is actually pretty light, probably the same weight as my XM-18. If you want a knife that will pull your pants down, I suggest giving the ZT 030X series a look. I carry either the SR-1, XM-18, or ZT 0551 as my heavy duty knife either at work or when I'm just out of the house. The SR-1 is big in the pocket, but the smooth titanium actually makes it easier to grab something out of that pocket as opposed to another knife with G10 scales which will eat your hand.

I also find the ZT 0301 to be more dangerous when closing one-handed due to the Speed-Safe which tends to want to pop the blade back open(and if it does, your index finger will follow it straight back to the edge). All you need to do is get into the habit of pushing the lock bar all the way to the left, move the blade slightly, move your thumb out of the way, then close the blade. I could do it blind-folded:D.

I have to admit I've always found pocket carry of any folding knife with a clip to be...well, strange. I can carry any clip-less knife in my pocket, so why use a clip to keep it in the same place? I've always carried clip-equipped folding knives in my waistband, usually on my hip in about the four or five o'clock position. It's readily accessible there, it's less noticeable (people generally aren't looking as closely at your side or back as they are your front) and even a shiny clip is well covered by a belt. It doesn't get in my way when sitting, fastening a seatbelt, bending over to tie a shoe or any other activity, and leaves my pockets wholly accessible for keys, smaller pocket knives, my space pen and anything else that needs to ride in a pocket because it DOESN'T have a clip. I've been EDCing the SR-1 for awhile now and it's so light on a waistband and so trim and rounded in its edges that I honestly forget that I have it on and have had to rescue it from the clothes hamper a time or two.

Seriously, give IWB carry a try in a few positions. I actually tried pocket carry of a clipped folder a few times and was so disgusted by how freakin' in the way it was that I gave up after only a few hours.

Would you guys consider this knife a overbuilt, really strong pocket knife? Even more so than a zt300 and strider smf and/or sng?

Yes. Just get one already. If you don't like it, flip it.
