Liquid Bread (It's good for you)

So, my plan to open a brewery ran in to a few setbacks. Zoning being the biggest one, at present. While I'm working that out though, it gives me a chance to really build my brand strength. And one of those strengths (I hope) is having a range of lesser known beer types. Some ideas I have are for things like a re-launch of the old Babylonian beer that may be the oldest beer known to man. It's a tall order, but I think I can pull it off.

Another brew I'd like to put out is one I saw on a Travel Channel show not long ago. A guy in Nepal was traveling with some Sherpa and got to try a rice beer of theirs they simply callled "Sherpa Beer". If anyone knows anything about that particular beer, how it's made or how I can find out, let me know. Maybe Auntie Yangdu would be best to talk to about that one.

On to the reason I created this post; I'd love to hear from you guys on beers you'd like to see. I'm looking for beers with some interesting history, a little exotic maybe. Something you came across in your travels, or even heard about once would be great.

If it's something feasible, and I use your suggestion, you'll get two barrels free instead of the one I'm offering the rest of the Cantinists. Now if that's not motivation, I don't know what is! :D

Thanks guys

I suspect "Sherpa beer" is what is known as "chang."

You can google "chang beer" or "Sherpa chang beer" or "chang beer recipie" to get some ideas.

Back in my alcohol-drinking days I thought it pretty good. Especially when consumed out of a dirty glass on the dirt floor of a little hut, after a climb of a few thousand feet.

That looks like the one. Apparently according to lore, it's popular with Yeti. "Yeti Ale" for a name?

Thanks Howard!

HUGE liquid bread fan here... Sorry to here about your troubles... One would think they'd make it EASIER rather than harder to open up businesses the way things have been going... My local (Cigar City Brewing) ran a blog describing all of the issues/bs/hurdles they had to jump... I think it was named with a rif on the song 99 problems...The hassles they dealt with... man... They finely get open and brewing and the local council person tries to get their tasting room yanked out!! That one actually brought out a good protest at the council meeting... Best of luck!!!

I'm a big fan of Cigar City as of late. A new place opened nearby to me in Jacksonville called Green Room Brewing that sells only Florida brewed beers and I had the Jai Alai IPA there. Very tasty.

Hey dude, where are you? You location says Ft Meade. Jacksonville is only a couple hours north of me.

Being a proper Scotsman, I love booz. . .er, liquid bread!

I do tend to prefer dark, strong beers like stouts.

You evern plan on doing other things? I'd sure like some good honey mead!

Oh yeah, I forgot to change that location. I got out of the Army some time ago and came back to FL. I've tried my hand at mead a time or two, but it didn't come out as well as I'd hoped. Next month I'm going to be attempting the fourth mead recipe I've been suggested, and see how it turns out. If I can get it down consistently, and actually make it good, I'll be bottling that as well.

Good luck with getting the brewery up and running.

Not sure about this one:

And for the kids:
My favorite drink made of wheat (with only the slightest fermentation leading to only a few % alcohol when left sitting) is 'Boza'. I believe it is Turkish originally or Middle Eastern, but it has spread to SE Europe (the Balkans) and further. It is all mostly carbs (3/4 of that is sugars) so don't drink it if you have weight/health problems, but your kids will love it. It is also good in your protein shake if you are a young ectomorph trying to bulk up. It is hard to find in the US, but you can get a case shipped to your door at bozausa.com

One of Thailand best selling national beer used the word "Chang" for it:

Check out "malta" which you can find with the Spanish foods in the supermarket. My daughter will still drink that but not like when she was an infant. :)

Good luck, man.

I was just telling my GF yesterday that lemon balm (a kind of lemony mint) might make a good flavor accent in a beer.

Shandys are quite popular over here in the UK. i prefer guinness stout myself, less calories and less CO2 than lagers and ales.

England has a darn good small brewing scene. I REALLY look fwd to tucking into a pint of proper ale (hitting the 1st good pub I see after the express train into the city!) on holidays there... Some of the small local breweries are doing amazing things...The football's pretty good too! ;-)

This may or may not be helpful, and unfortunately, I always have been and always will be alcohol free, but my sister is a master of bartending, and she might be able to make some suggestions for you. I'll try to get her to come over and type up some suggestions, or feed them to me for me to type up, but, either way, I hope to be able to help you, Voodoo. Peac--OH, I have an idea. Have you ever considered making gluten free alcoholic beverages? That is a little known option for you to try out, if you like. My mother is gluten sensitive, which is why I mentioned it, and she likes fine wines, and mixable drinks similar to martini's, and she is always forced to buy potato vodka and similar, apparently less palatable gluten free options. I bet you the gluten intolerant would flock to you if you came out with a great tasting alternative to gluten-containing beers, but, again, I don't know if that is possible or impossible for you. Well, peace, let me know if you are interested in hearing my sisters suggestions, she is a great bartender for JB Dawsons and has her alcoholic beverages and brews down pat.

You guys continue to be pretty awesome, and great sounding boards as usual. I'm going to start a couple of these ideas up soon. May take two or three brewings to get them perfect though. Anyone that's interested though, I may try and swing some up to the next Blade Show in Atlanta, free samples for all.

I'd love to hear your sister's ideas. Any and all are welcome. I'm not sure about the gluten-free beer though, as I just don't have the first idea of how to do it. Something to work on in the spare time though maybe.

Unfortunately, I totally forgot to ask her the last time I saw her, Voodoo, I'm sorry dude...but I will on our hopefully scheduled Sunday dinner. As for gluten-free...my mom has a thirst for knowledge when it comes to her intolerance for gluten, so perhaps I can ask her if any food products are capable of producing alcohol. I doubt she would drink beer, but think of how many people would drink it if you made it an availability. Well, peace.
