I know a guy that wants me to ship him a knife, he's in Australia. I will be going to the Post Office later in the day and asking them if there is a problem with it. For future reference, is there an easy way to find out what countries allow knives to be shipped in?

There is an easy way. Go to the USPS website www.usps.com/ and click on ALL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES >> in the heading. Find I-L for International Mail Manual and you can get the restrictions for any country in the International Postal Union, like Australia.
