Hey guys, simple thread: I need a good comprehensive list of as many knife steels as possible and the steel's attributes and any relevant information about the steel. I've found several that list only a few to a few dozen steels, but I can't find any more. Any knife steel list would help, but I prefer an all-encompassing one.

Thanks guys,

Bo

Oh that's easy :

M4 = good because it cuts for ever, relatively easy to sharpen, takes and holds a hair popping edge longer than many of the super steels, takes a nice character from patina-like change but doesn't go over the top with rust. Is very accessible right now from a few makers, shines in cutting competitions,. . . I could gush on and on but you probably don't have an hour or two.

That's it.
Anything else is crap.

. . . but you won't believe me so you must go on your own long search to distant lands, climb steep and difficult mountains to search out enlightened masters . . . and then return to where you started to discover . . .
well you get the spiel.
Good luck Grass Hoppah.
Say hi to all the dudes (and dudetts) on the mountain tops from me. :)

It would be a very long list, try doing an internet search for Best Knife Steel, you will find all kinds of info.
We enjoy discussing blade steels and their pros and cons here, there is just so many different steels out there.

In addition learning about the different steels, you want to find out which brands do each steel best.

For example 420hc on a Leatherman blade is not the same as the excellent 420hc from Buck.
I've heard about many companies not doing certain steels as well as they could.

There's a knife steel app for apple phones just search for knife steel composition chart.
Gives a good description of the steel make up plus if its wear or corrosion resistance and if any steels are similar to the steel being searched.
I don't know if android has the same app or not been an apple guy for years, I hope this helps.

Already mentioned, Knife Steel composition chart which is a phone app, ZKnives, I think Spyderco has a steel reference.
Typically, I'll search here to see if there is any mention of a steel I'm looking at, as well as look at the manufacture's site.
I don't think such a list exists that you're looking for.

There is no comprehensive resource that compares the properties of all available knife steels. The Zknives chart shows compositions for almost everything. Some articles claim to provide properties for a shortlist of common steels. The required properties are not always available to give the comparisons. Different companies make the different steels and they have their own tests that they perform, which are often different than what another company performs. And not all of the tests are published or even performed on all of the grades that they produce. So to compare between all of the different steels independent tests must be performed on all of them, which is expensive and time consuming.

Wowbagger Wowbagger : I believe you that m4 is the best all around steel but I need to know all the steels because I want to open a knife sharpening business eventually.

@Scooter : ok thanks, I'll try that.

@hickory: is there something I can search for that?

@the edge : yeah I've tried searching that. I guess I'll keep trying.

@kwick: that's just for Apple, not for android? I'll try anyway.

Thank you to everyone. I have a few things to search now.

Bo
