As some of you may know I have been doing a lot of research on quench oils lately. This effort has generated the following thread!

This thread is not intended to be a discussion about which is better only what is available. So please lets not get into the quench wars about which is better. If you have information on the specs and distributors of any quench oil as well as a dated current price! Then by all means please list that info!

If we can get all the specs together, the distributors and prices in one thread I am going to suggest right now this should become a stickie!

Here is what I have been able to get so far:

Parks 50 - Need Specs - distributor - Kelly Cupples < octihunter@charter.net - current price 3/1/2012, Parks 50.....................................5 Gallon Bucket............................................ ....$150.00 +freight

AAA - Need specs - distributor - Kelly Cupples < octihunter@charter.net - current price 3/1/2012, AAA.............................................5 Gallon Bucket............................................ ....$120.00 +freight

Quench Oil Accelerator - Need specs - distirbutor - Kelly Cupples < octihunter@charter.net - current price 3/1/2012, Quench Oil Accelerater............ 5 Gallon Bucket............................................ ....$130.00 +freight

Houghton - Quench k - -Specs - http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/364...1007-specs-pdf-march-6-2012-11-06-am-80k?da=y - distributor - AMC Supply Inc., Tooling Division, contact - Jay Coleman jay@amctool.com - current price,3/6/12 Houghton K ..................5 Gallon bucket.............. $202.50

I know this is not all of the different quench oils being used out there. So if anyone has another quench oil to add to the list, please list specs, distributor and current price as date! If anyone has specs for the various quench oils they want to add to this list please feel free to post it!

Parks 50 from Maxim is only around $90 for 5 gallons plus shipping. They quoted me $41 for shipping to Oregon a few days ago and they said that was about the highest shipping cost they had seen for a bucket.

Jason, when was that?
When I spoke with the woman from Maxim yesterday I was quoted 80-something for a 5gal pail, and 130 to ship to Georgia. However, they're out with a shipment due in from HeatBath on thursday or friday with notice from HB there's a sight price increase. She couldn't quote a firm price until the shipment arrives and they can adjust, still--90 won't be bad, with 30 flat rate fedex (Maxim's carrier) it'll keep them slightly lower than Kelly's.

Dixie--are you sure that's 150 plus freight? Kelly told me monday that the 150 included the shipping.

I called Maxim the other morning. Below are the quench oils they have
Parkes 50 $86.50 (subject to change)
AAA don't know speed $ 57.37
Duratherm T48 fast oil $ 70.90 slightly faster than the Duratherm G
Duratherm G 10-12 second $ 60.62
5 gallon pail delivered by Fed Ex from fort Worth Tx to the Western part of Fla Panhandle $29 and 3 days. They use a zone method for the pricing on the shipping. If you are just over the zone line, have it shipped to a friends place a few miles away in a different and cheaper zone.

When I had called Maxim, this is the info I was given by the person I spoke to. They also told me that the Duratherm oils are oils that they have come up with on their own. They based it on "Gulf Quench 70" which is the quench oil that set the standard (That is what the person on the phone said, not me).

I emailed McMaster Carr asking about shipping on the 1 gallon and 5 gallon quench oil. The reply I received is:
"The estimated shipping charge for the 1-gal. container is $6.50. The 5 gal. container is $12.50."
That is from Chicago to NW Fla. After hearing the shipping from Maxim, I'm not sure the $12.50 shipping is correct on a 5 gal pail.

Edit here: Ed, If I knew for sure when I would be coming through Valdosta, I would offer to bring you a pail if you would have it shipped to me. I have family in Waycross.

Now it does say below this line is subject to, to me that means may or maynot be. So I was trying to err on the side of no surprises!

When I called Maxim on Friday, the Lady I talked to said that the price has been $86.50 but that it would be going up slightly. She said she didn't think it would be more than a couple of dollars on a five gallon pail.
The reason for the price increase is twofold: Apparently, Heatbath recently raised their prices a little and, due to a bunch of small orders in the last week, Maxim ordered a few barrels so they could fulfill our orders faster rather than the usual tanker truck, so the freight costs on their end are slightly higher.

Unfortunately, I live in a shipping craphole and everything costs more and takes longer to get here than just about anywhere else in the country. I happen to be in a small town almost exactly halfway between two shipping hubs in Portland and San Francisco on the west coast. Anything coming here by truck first goes to San Francisco, then up I-5 to Portland, passing not a half a mile from my house along the way, then back down I-5 to the local hub and out to me.

Jason, You've my heart felt sympathies as several other supplier quoted insane rates for added hazmat to have them shipped to me. I'll not even mention what ammunition powders were being rated when I was still reloading.

Dixie--thanks for posting kelly's full list, he never sent me one yesterday.

Rail--if you need me to have something shipped here, we could work it out for when you're set to drive through. As it was, Mcmaster's quote is off--they SHOULD have redirected you to the Atl division. I have a friend who lives not 5 miles from them and I have him send me stuff all the time--he can generally get out in flat rate (6-10 bucks) what they have otherwise previously quoted for up to 29 bucks in shipping.
I'd thought about their stuff, but it's 11-sec and too slow for my steels.

Ed,
E-mail Kelly. He'll send you the full list. That isn't the full list posted. It's only the stuff Kelly charges freight for.

Here is another to add to the list from another site. His name is removed because I didn't ask the makers permission to quote him!

DT48 from Maxim oil, - NO specs, - developed this fast quench just for us small knifemakers.

Ask for Lee or carla 1-817-293-40il

There in texas and it cost me a little more then $100 $120 for 5gal including shipping.
They also have parks 50
I highly reccomend them for a supplier of quench oil

If anyone has the specs for these quench oils that have been posted without specs, please feel free to post them. That is what I was hoping this thread would accomplish. Inform everyone!

I sent an email to Heatbath asking where AAA and Parks were available. The reply I received is below.

"Maxim Oil would be the only location in the south to obtain the AAA. Otherwise, Detroit and Springfield, Massachusetts are locations where the product is manufactured.

Thank you for your interest in Heatbath products."

I can't help but wonder, with the high cost of quench oil why these companies are not better at answering questions completely ( they seem to answer only one questions and often times there have been multiple questions) and why they just seem to ignore requests for spec data! I have resent request for data on all the products on this list that I have no spec data for. Time will tell if they are going to respond.

They should know that optimum use of there product is based on quench time and the proprieties of that quench. So above all they should know that we are trying to match there product with the particular steel we are using as well as any information they can give would aid in that decision being made! Not every quench is appropriate for every steel and the more information the companies provide the better to make an informed decision.

OK, no more playing games I ordered a 5 gallon bucket of Parks 50 Today from Maxim oil. Delivered to my door by Fed Ex $129.39. I figure with oil prices its only going to go up.
Ask for Lee or carla 1-817-293-40il. Lee was out but Carla quoted me and then took my order about an hour later, when I got back to my PC and read the email. Great people to work with! That beats the price I have been quoted by everyone else, even my local supplier for another quench oil!

On a side note they are out at the moment but will take an order and ship as soon as they receive. She also said that some posts on a forum had generated a great amount of business is why they are out for the first time ever! So guess it does help to discuss all the variables! :D

Still think this needs to be a sticky, as there is a lot of info compiled into one thread!

Last year I was able to drive to Maxim's facility to buy my P50 and was totally impressed with them. I told them what I wanted and would be there around 4:30 but traffic slowed me down, so I called them and said I would be late. They said "no problem, we'll be here for you". When I showed up at 5:40 everyone was gone except Lee and Carla and they had a beautiful blue bucket waiting on me with my name written on it. I think I only paid $72 total for it. My heart goes out to all of you who have to have it shipped.

They are great people to deal with!
Jason

Be careful talking like that you'll get buttercup whining again! :D I just feel better going ahead now, rather than waiting till summer and gas is over $5.00 a gal. imagine what the quench oil will be worth then!

I finally got these specs on Parks 50:

Here is another quench oil and specs, Chevron Quenching Oil 70:

Categories: Fluid; Lubricant
Material Notes: Features
Chevron Quenching Oil 70 is a premium quality quenching oil.

It is designed to provide controlled cooling of steel which is important in steel hardening. When quenching is started, Chevron Quenching Oil 70 provides a high initial cooling rate inducing maximum hardness, yet once the critical transformation temperature is passed, the ideal fluid cooling rate decreases to eliminate the possibility of stresses and metal distortion.

Applications

Chevron Quenching Oil 70 is recommended for use

when deep and uniform hardening is required in steels having small grain size or wide variation in grain size
in steels with lean alloy content
in parts having variable sections or odd shapes
in steels having variable hardenability
This highly stable oil resists the oxidizing effects of quenching and is less sensitive to the effects of agitation. It is highly heat resistant. No additive replacement is required and, in normal service, the product retains the original viscosity indefinitely. Because of its ability to adhere to smooth or shiny surfaces, Chevron
