I am looking for a list of leather suppliers besides Tandy. I would prefer to deal with American companies. Links for their websites would be even better if you have them. I had such a list in my favorites and it appears to have been accidentally deleted.
Any recommendations on these companies would be greatly appreciated too as I am about to buy an entire side of Veggie tanned 7-8oz. (how is the service, good to deal with, etc., etc.)!

Before someone says it I know Tandy is an American company however a lot of there leather comes from overseas!

OK I just looked at Wicket-Craig site and they are having a sale on overstocked Bridle (English Bridle).

Is this any good for making sheaths or do I just want veg-tanned shoulders or sides for sheaths??????

My personal choice is the veg tanned utility skirting and then have it split to the weight of your choice, free. I buy 8/10 weight sides in four colors and have them split to 7/8 and 2/3.

Talk to Glen Proud ext. 222, and he'll walk you through the choice.

English bridle certainly has its place, but not my preference for sheaths etc.

I've used W&C Skirting for a bunch of sheaths and it works pretty well for me. Russet is plain leather, the other colors are pre-dyed. The Predyed stuff is so much nicer to work with. No need to worry about spilling dyes and stains or waiting for them to dry. Good stuff!

Paul, what does this mean...? Having it split? I'm getting ready to order some leather to get started with a few sheaths. How well does that utility skirting hold to stamping and tooling?

Griz, I find the utility skirting takes carving and holds stamping as well as any veg tan I've ever used. The key here is veg tan which does not have the added oils that English Bridle and Harness leathers have as part of their tanning process.

The skirting sides generally don't come any lighter weight than 8/10 Oz. and since I use primarily 7/8 and 2/3 oz. I get them to split 8/10 oz sides down to those two weights I use. There is no charge for splitting and they keep the splits (with my blessing).

I see, (sorry was having a brain fart)...they thin the leather down to the thickness you need.

Is 7/8 primarily the weight to look for when doing your basic fold-over pouch sheath?

Griz, I line everything I make so when you couple the 7/8 with the deer skin lining or in some cases with a 2/3 veg tan lining you wind up with about the equivalent of 8/10 Oz. If I was making anything unlined I'd probably have the 8/10 weight in my inventory. To answer your question though, I think 7/8 oz. is plenty heavy enough for most applications in pouch style sheaths.
