Sorry, folks, but I had a catastrophic computer crash and now I can't seem to find that wonderful link to types of steels and their characteristics, by a forum member. Can anyone help me out?

If you mean CPM 440V, it's there, just look down where S60V and its friends are. Same steels with different names.

If you mean something different.......I'll shut up now. :D

Great link, I enjoyed reading it.

One question have -- while I'm not a steel snob, why would a company like Al Mar use a stainless toward the low end of the spectrum, or Cold Steel (which used to be a quality company) make thier high-end stainless knives out of less than premium material?

Although I have to admit I never had any problems with an edge on my stainless CS knives, but then I don't use them for rough work, either.

I'm sure cost is a factor, but AUS-8 gets a bad rap, and it doesn't deserve it. It will not hold an edge like S30V, it is true, but it will stand up to rough use much better, and is much more suited to use in big knives.

Also I think that in the past many years, some knife companies have moved forward with newere steels, which makes companies that haven't moved on look somewhat less premium.
