I decided to spend the weekend of the 4th squishing around a remnant of a 180 layer billet and see if I could come up with something respectable in size.

The piece I had left over was 180 layers of 1095, L6, and some 15n20.....the piece was about 5/16" thick and 2" square. I welded the chunk to a piece of rebar and drew it out with the press and forged in a tang with the drawing dies. All this talk about presses recently made me want to squish some steel

I then handforged the tip, bevels, and ricasso into a Bowie blade that measures about 6.5" long and resulted in a blade 3/16" thick. The guard is some raindrop pattern that I hadn't used before. It is JB Welded in place. (note here that I used one of Uncle Al's guard soldering fixtures and they are GREAT!). The handle is a nice Sambar taper that had a big bump on the side (not a Bruce Bump)....I ground that away and then gave it some color with brown shoe dye. The handle has a single NS pin and it is finished off with an ebony buttcap.

The sheath is heavy pigskin.

The knife ended up being a nice light carry Bowie and dear God is it sharp!

Greg, that knife is easily my favorite of the knives you've made. Great damascus, stag, guard, and profile, everything looks outstanding.

That's classy Greg!! I like everything about it, even the pigskin! Good going guy!

Looks darn nice to me. I just got done using my press today for the second time. I built it myself, but I am still amazed at how nice they are at sqashing stuff. :D

Again very nice knife, I absolutly love the gaurd and the profile.

Thanks for all the compliments!

I have always liked Bowies where the stag handle goes into the guard more narrow than the blade ricasso. Problem it that is it is tough to find a good Sambar taper anymore.

I feel like a kid at Xmas everytime I pull that blade out after the first etch....the patterns are like magic....that is why I love random patterns and cable so much.
