Little axes.

I like what he did with the long handle on the reground hatchet head. I think that as a whole we have the tendency to go a bit short in the handle on our axes/hatchets/'hawks. The extra leverage allows for more chop-per-pound.

I agree with this perspective as well.
I just re-hung a cheap double bit hatchet from Marble's. The original handle broke almost immediatly, and so I grabbed a longer hickory handle laying around the shop. The newer handle is several inches longer, and now it has so much more power. The weight is further from the hand, so there was more muscle strain to use it. I chopped down two smallish Spruce trees two days ago, and used the double bit to limb them. It bites deeper than before, for sure. And choking up on the handle is still an option.

Hey Foxx, how is the blade on that Marbles? Is the steel decent? Did you recarve the longer helve to fit the three "tunnels?

Regards

Robin

I haven't used it extensivly, but it seems to have a decent HT. The grind is a bit off one one side, sort of curves a bit.
Well, I started out carving the new handle to fit the tunnels, with hand tools. I used a sander to get the overall shape I needed, tap on the head as to mark where it was rubbing.
So, on and off again and again, each time routing out the 4 grooves. Once I was most of the way there, I used a flat tree stump, a rubber mallet, and a hammer (only on the hickory handle) to force it on the rest of the way. I did slightly crack the new handle in the process. Some wood glue, some rescue tape, and then the cammo wrap finished it off. I've cut down two trees last week, used the Marbles double bit to de-limb both trees.
It's really a hammer handle, not really the best choice, but it was free. I guess I was trying to see how good the Marbles performed before commiting to buying a better handle.
I paid $30 for the Marbles, the original shaft was crap, don't trust it. If you find one with an even grind, and want to re-handle one, I guess it's worth it, for $30.

Thanks Foxx, I was thinking of grabbing one just to finish my Nessie trio. I've been looking for an old double bit but haven't found one yet. That's a nice looking nessie you have there.

Best regards

Robin

I concur with Robin. Nice Nessie trio. I have been considering both the Marbles double bit and the Condor double bit. Your info will definitely weigh in on that decision. Thanks.

Has anyone tried the small double bit axe from Moore Maker?
Any information about how it performs?
USA-made, 4140 steel, Rockwell 50, list price just under $50.
