This is my prototype of a little bag axe that I am thinking of offering to my customers. I had many requests for such an axe and finally I found the time to make and test this one.

The head measures 5" overall with a 1 7/8" cutting edge.

Handle is 9" long.

Steel is 1018 with a piece of 1095 fire welded for the cutting edge.

I chopped through a 6" hard maple log without any real difficulties plus I used it around the shop, trimming billets for hawk hafts/handles, roughing out blanks in green oak to make parts for a country ladderback chair and lent it out to a wood carver who was removing waste for something that looks like a sculpture of a beaver and now refuses to give it back until he's finished.

Anyways, I thought I would post it here to get some feedback from you fellas, positive or negative, what do you think?

Thank you,
Stephen

The head comes in at 1lb. I don't have a picture from the top but it does have an oval eye.

I followed your link, and it is a nice axe but just a little too modern for me. I like the more traditional or historic look since a lot of my customers are re-enactors and historical trekkers.

Thanks for the feedback,
Stephen

That's a darn sweet looking piece of hardware Stephen

I like it. It looks very useful & I like the looks of it, too. Very nice.

Very noice looking work. Would like to feel it in my hand..

Thanks for all the comments.

It seems that I will be forging more of these little ones in the near future, like this week. I received an order for two yesterday from a visitor to my shop. Same size, same design but with purpleheart handles. Should look good.

Thanks again,
Stephen

I really like it.

The only thing I would change would be to make the head narrower the poll shorter and the bit wider (longer?) so you'd get more chopping edge for the same amount of weight.

Also I would do away with that secondary bevel and make the grind much less steep for more cutting efficiency.

I especially like the shorter ones like he pictured that still have some weight behind them. That length and 1 lb is nearly ideal for packing and stuff IMO:thumbup:
