Well the postman placed a nice package in my mail box today, a sharp, very
sharp knife, made by Jimmy Fikes, known on the forums as OleyFermo, but
is just about a living legend as he has quite a history where knives/forging and
damascus is concerned.

This knife was a gift to me, while I don't deserve such a gift, he was very
gracious in sending and making one for me, he normally doesn't make a small
knife, blade about 3 1/2" long, fairly thick but chisel edged and does quick
work of what ever comes in contact with the fine edge he applied.
The grip is nice epoxy coated cord with a very tactile type grip and for my
small/medium size hands, fits great!

apologies for the images, they were quickly taken tonight...

Of course this arrives just before I leave tomorrow for Switzerland for work :(
but it will be here when I arrive back next week.

Again, Jimmy, much thanks sir! Just right...:)

Boy, that is a nice little knife. I'll bet it comes in quite handy, quite often. I like the choice of red cord for the handle to spice it up a bit. Great looking makers mark too.

What is the overal length?

Thanks, it's quite useful, mainly since I don't hunt and require a curvy tip, I like the more straight edge of the wharncliff, he made it with a slight curve so you can cut on a cutting board, like those bits of leather you see ;)

Overall length is 7 3/4"
From the tip to the wrap is 4" and handle comes in with the rest, 3 3/4"

blade is just under 3/16" and about 1 1/4" wide

Very sharp as most Fikes knives are, I had a scrap of leather laying near by, could almost hear it laughing at it :)

I like that knife quite a bit. Remind me to become close friends with Mr. Fikes. ;) :)

Gary, I see that piece of leather is now laughing out of all sides of it's mouth:eek:.

On the end of the handle...it looks like a band??? What is it, and why is it there instead of the metal of the knife, just curious:confused:.

I've not seen one of Fikes knives before close-up...but have read and very much enjoyed his posts. He is a witty and funny man. Preston

More like the knife laughing at about anything that heads it's way ;)

But the mark at the end is a blossom of sorts, perhaps Mr Fikes will join in
the fray and explain how and why that came to be?

And I updated the top photo so refresh your browser if you're seeing this
thread again...

And yes, he is a witty fellow, you should see him at work in the woods with
his Sword, a neat home made video that is around somewhere...

Gary,
Congtatulations!
Awesome knife.
Awesome maker.
Second Preston on Jimmy's wit and humor!

Doug

Thanks Doug, very awesome knife to be sure! the blade has a distinct ring sound to it when struck against metal, a great hard sounding ring, one that brings a smile to your face :)

There is also a hamon of sorts that is visible, the poor quick photos above does not show that very well, the blade is lightly polished, overall it's a great
cutter! Now it needs a sheath...

and thanks Dan! Good idea too!

That's just a terrific little knife - thanks for giving us a look at it and enjoy!

Roger

Great knife from a great guy! Congratulations.
I'll tell you what, take it with you and make a stom in Paris before going to Switzerland, leave it with me and I'll take good care of it before you come back. It's no good to leave such a young puppy unsupervised :D

What a nice little knife. I'd call that a variant of his Cabin Boy model. Send it to me while your gone, I'll make a sheath for it.

Win

Thanks Roger and Flava and Win, I'll think about it, but it's not too likely,it would probably never come home!
And Flava, this time it's direct flight from Newark NJ to Zurich, no Paris this time, but a long drive to Newark :(

Gary, that postman made a mistake. That knife was made for me,so hurry up and mail it to the correct address:D :D .
You had said that the knife was laughing at the leather, surely you meant any leather Win uses or rather tries to use to make a sheath:p .
Great knife Gary, and that was very nice of Fikes to give you that wonderful gift.

Congratulations Gary and Jimmy
wonderful to hold and behold..function and simplicty.
almost all the knife I would ever need..I love it!!!

Raj, I'll double check that but I'm pretty sure it was addressed correctly
and it was PACKED extremely well, the knife was wrapped up tighter than
a mummy with paper towel and then taped down tight to the knife and that
was then wrapped so tightly I had to use a pair of pliers from the tube it
was sent in.

And thanks Ran, it is a very useful style of knife, for me a straighter edge proves
to be handier when cutting rope, boxes and about anything else, I had a knife
similar in make up but just flip that knife above over, making the spine the edge
and you'd just about have the blade shape of his very nice knife called "Cabin Boy"

Had a chance to cut some with this, very sharp, easy cutting knife
still haven't made a sheath for it yet, will be doing that soon I hope!

That's a nice knife. I know that he stopped making knives, but is Mr. Fikes offering his wares again?

kamagong, that's a good question, he very well may come back into the fold
you can just never tell!

Thanks Pete, it's a sharp one to be sure :)
