decided to rent a Forest Service cabin for the night up the Little Blackfoot River (brother to the famous Big Blackfoot of A River Runs Through It fame), it's about a 8 mile ski (or snowshoe) in. I'm using my recently acquired Altai Hok skis and pulling my diy pulk I made last year. the pulk has my sleeping gear, axe, saw, shovel, food and extra clothing, the Dana Design lumbar pack carries all of my essentials and with the MountainSmith strapettes added, is also charged with pulling the pulk

the Little Blackfoot River- this is the very head end of the river, so it is little

I've never been to this cabin, but it's dandy (built in the 30's, but still rock solid)

got a fire going and some snow melting

traveling with a pulk cuts down on the worry of weight, so had a hearty supper

first course

tough to beat steak and beans (and beer! :4:)

really a nice trip, nice enough I think I'm going to talk the wife into skiing in with me next weekend :)

thanks for looking

Sweet trip.
Did you hobnail your boots or did they come that way and are they compatible with the Hoks?
I've looked at your bowl and cup and am skeptical. What's your take?

danke

those are just air bob soles, they come that way :) I have the universal bindings so just about any boot will work- I like these (Schnees) as they are warm and tall enough I don't need gaiters

the Kuplika cups/bowls are great imo- the traditional wood kuskas are nice (I'm making one now :)), but these are going to break or crack and much less costly (as start on mine I can see why the wooden ones are spendy!)

Thanks MTw. Breakage was my fear, well not fear, but concern. I've never actually broken a bowl before, but a drop onto a rock might make them leaky.
I think it was the lighting that makes to boots look Hobnailed.:D

Now that I review the pics, it dawned on me that the broke trail was a lot easier to travel than last seasons hike through deep unbroken powder,,up hill.

yeah- don't know if they (cups/bowls) are bombproof, but certainly thus far very sturdy :)

^ good memory :) that was a different cabin (one I still plan on getting into this winter) and you are absolutely correct, much tougher pull and much tougher snow conditions

i have been using a Kupilka cup (just finished some coffee) bowl, and plate for over a year now, drop each one of them at least once, with no damage so far. I also like my wooden Kuksa, but did break a little of the rim when I dropped it. John

Good to know John. It seems I've been honing my gear my whole life, but that's half the fun. Kent

Great trip! I love fishing the Little Blackfoot. Haven't gotten up there to do any snowshoeing.

I rented the cabin for this upcoming weekend and have the wife talked into going :)
We're going to bring our Tenkara rods as there several fishable stretches along the way

The Trout fisherman in me sniffed out "Kading cabin" Looks like the beetles have really hit that area hard.:(

Nice little get away trip. I bet the cabin is warmer this weekend with momma going :) lol. Thanks for taking us along.

^ yup really bad- some very nice mature, tall lodgepole- all dead :( fortunately a few pockets of live trees here and there to reseed things, but it will be a long time healing

Sue is nice to have such a resource readily available and rentable. Beautiful location.
The pulk really makes it easier to *ahem* pulk in your gear. That one sure is compact, too. Thanks for the pics and writeup.

Tenkara you say? Perfecto, especially frozen-finger friendlier on the snowbanked streams. Major fun-zone all around, so desu ne?

enjoy!
