I'm getting the hang of finding the right thread... :P

OK so my brother's birthday is coming up soon and he said that he would like a knife. Perfect. I would like to stick with the Kershaw brand just because it's what i am familiar with.

he'll be turning 15 and he wants one of the speedsafe models, so he can use it for an EDC on the weekend.

Any suggestions welcome :D

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is the Lahar. It's only around $60, has a 3/5" VG-10 blade (that is known to extremely sharp out of the box), G10 handle, and the flipper system which just requires a very slim flick of the wrist for it to open just like a speed safe knife.

A Leek? Inexpensive, easy to obtain (they sell them at Wal-mart right?), good knife.

With a 15 year-old, I'd be inclined to go smaller rather than larger. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems to me when people see a big knife in the hands of a teenager, they're even more likely to think "weapon" than they are with an adult.

I think the already-mentioned Leek is a great option, or maybe a scallion. The smaller ENER-G or JYD flippers might be good choices as well.

How about a pair. One decent folder, and a fixed blade. That would make a nice gift. Perhaps a Buck 110 folder, and one of their fixed blades.

IMO you can't go wrong with a mini Cyclone, Leek, or Scallion as mentioned. The latter two are probably easier to come by as they are sold at most Walmart stores, although for under $50 at most online retailers, the mini-Cy is a great option. Any one of them would be extremely sharp out of the box.

Get your little bro a Mini-Cyclone or a Needs Work. Trust me on this.:).

Hmmm...I'd say the Lahar or my second choice if I didn't have the Lahar already...a JYD II.

Both don't look tactical. But could be used in that regard if need be.

How responsible is little brother? Is he prone to lose things? Or break things? If so, a Scallion from Wally World will do the trick. If he's more responsible, go with the Mini Cyclone.

Weekend carry, SpeedSafe, 15 years old...no offense my friend, but he sounds like a budding mall ninja. If there's a chance it will be confiscated, go the Scallion route...it's a lot less intimidating to sheeple and authority type persons, and is cheaper to replace if and/or when it is lost/stolen/or confiscated.

Regardless of the knife chosen, it's still a knife. I would stress to him that it's not a toy, it's a tool. Teach him to have the proper respect for this tool, and he should be OK. That's your main responsibility in this situation, not picking the perfect knife.

I cast my vote for the Leek. I got my brother one and he loves it. It is easy to carry, non-threatening, and fun to use.

I agree with the Scallion choice its nice and small but it does the job. Also look at the Blackout or the Whirlwind very light carry and a good first knife imo. I also like the Mini Cyclone but it's a little intimidating to the sheeple people. All are SpeedSafe knives. All under $80.00 and 4".

Go for a Leek!!!!

Buck??????? WTH?

mike

Ya know, Buck, Kershaw its all the same isn't it? ;)

I swear, I thought it would pretty hard to get lost on Blade Forums and just wander in somewhere. Maybe someone should tell him that the General Discussion Forum is a couple of exits back.

Now to the point......wait what was the point......oh yeah,...2 words, Baby Boa. How the heck can you get into trouble with a Baby Boa. Nice knife and very useful for the majority of small tasks.

Mini Mojito!
Can't believe no one else suggested it.
Its got SpeedSafe, studlock, and the coolest safety on any knife.

It looks great and has a really solid build.

You can't go wrong with the Leek.If you want to spend a little more, get him the Leek with the S30V blade & G10 handle. It's one of my favorite edc's

i also think one of the smaller assisted opening kershaws like the leak, scallion, or mojito would make a great gift.
