No, I'm not talking about Tim Herman or Tom Mayo!

That's the name of my new knife! I did all the work myself, including heat treat. I pretty much skipped most of the usual finishing steps, but I like him (yeah, this one is too damn ugly to be a her!) all the same. The blade is dark because I etched in ferric chloride and I didn't have anything to neutralize it with, so it just kept getting darker and darker. I could polish it out, but why bother!

Anyway, tell me what you think, and don't hold back! I did a crude job using crude materials. But it's MY job and MY stuff, so I'm still proud of it!

Specs:
* 3/16" 1084 steel differentially heat-treated and tempered.
* Blade is about 3.5" OAL is around 7".
* Blade is convex ground with a file and has been etched to reveal the temper line.
* Handle is black linen Micarta with red liners and four 3/32" diameter stainless pins. Scales are finished to 120 grit for a grippy, but smooth, feel.
* Light filework on the spine for thumb traction (yes, I made the file cuts graduating in size on purpose!). Whaddya think?

Chiro75,

Be proud, you made it.
I like any knife that is handmade and I will darned if I would even consider throwing stones from my glass house.
It is a cool little blade.
There I didn't hold back.
It was a lot of fun to make I'll bet

Heck yea I invented it ...What is it???
I only do what the voices in my wifes head tell me to do.
It's kinda like hangin, you never get used to it.

I like it!

I would perhaps make a larger indentation for the forefinger, and lengthen the handle very slightly--perhaps drop the butt end a bit too? Other than that, your design is simple and elegant. I like the graduated filework.

Is this convex ground on both sides, or is it a "scythe" grind?

good work dude!!! hey steve...your email isnt working, have sent two messages that both came back!!??!! I would add, you should take the pics from the top with the knife laying flat, you cant see it very well the way you have it....tom

be proud you did it buy yourself
and nothing can take place of that
try baking soda in warm water to stop the ferric cloride, from ageing it any more
all the best you learned alot from your first
blade,,you can read all you want and still not get it,until you go and do it

Thanks for the input, guys. The knife is fully convex ground on both sides. The handle is relatively flat, so I made it wide to fill the hand. The finger notch needs to be a lot deeper, I agree, but when you are using a Dremel for this job, you get pretty happy with what you see there! It takes FOREVER! That's what small contact wheels are for, but then again, small contact wheels are worthless without a belt grinder!
