managed to sneak out for an overnight with my Cousin Chiristian (actually he's my nephew, but we're so close in age (8 mos. apart) we are more like cousins.
anyway we went ot my usual lake location except we decided to take a round about 7 mile hike in.. across some decent terrain.. We got to the sight about 3:00 and needed to get cracking getting camp set up and getting some wood together to get us set up for the long dark cold night ahead.. Temps dropped to around 30F and we got spit on by freezing raing for about 90 minutes in the early evening, There wasn;t much going on in terms of Skills.. althought we used a fair amount of map and compass to find our way in...

Here's the view fromt he sight when we got to camp

I laid my poncho down for a groundcloth and stuffed it with leaves ( held in place by a stick frame work onderneath the poncho, to form a sleeping pad (worked ok but not quite as god as a bow bed or a therma rest

here's the set up Nothing major just a etowah tarp stretched over a deadfall oak

We kept the fire small to conserve wood, and moved some logs real close to provide a sitting/kitchen/ work area

a little fire lay, With soem dried grass tinder.. went up with one spark

The camp being so simple was rather unobtrusive, Fromt he trai above you wouldn;t notice it unless you where looking for it.

mtnfolk, tell your son he's not the only one thinking that (50+ yrs. old :) ).
John, I wonder how many of us would like to wake up every morning with that view you had with your coffee ??? Great shots, glad you guys survived the night. Once you got the poncho filled under, how did it do during the night with just the leavess under you? Thanks for taking us along.
Be safe.

Fixed it for you:D
Looks like a great time

I'm starting to recognize your haunts John! Man, that big tarp looks comfy. Aren't you usually squeezing yourself under your poncho? Great pics!

THanks for the comments guys... Sorry for the Poo pics, but often when track conditions are not ideal, scat can be some of the most efficient means to identify the local fauna
Here's me an my bud

Ken,

I still Love the Poncho... but I paid 7- clams for the tarp so I figured I might as well use it. LOL..as far as the Haunts Go I keep thinking I;m gonna find some place new.. But this particular spot has it all.

:D

I'm amazed at that SAK the coyote passed! Clean as a whistle...

Oh, thanks for the pictures. Looks like a good time and some great scenery.

Good times getting out, eh? Thanks for sharing. Haven't had a night outside in a while now. Maybe this winter/fall.

looks chilly up there , good camp & enough leaves under a poncho make great insulation.do you remember what the tarp weighed? all you needed was a good breakfast of spuds, onions, & sausage.

Hey John, sorry to say, that's not bear scat. I was through that area a few days ago, and I couldn't help taking a dump right there. ;)

Looks like a great night out. I'll be getting together with a friend or two to hit the woods around here soon, probably this week.
