This little ax was a big challenge to say the least. I started out with a piece of W-2 that was 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 4 1/2". The first step was drilling fifteen 1/8" holes and then cleaning it up with a carbide burr to get my slot for the eye. This was done on my drill press. Actually the forging was pretty simple but when it came time to drift the eye my plan went south pretty fast. I was hoping I could use a round drift and it would spred the slot and everything would be all straight and true. I let it set for a week or two before I came up with another idea. I was thinking I would have to make a special drift but got by with my tomahawk drift and I was able to straighten it out. Making the haft was a major time consummer but all and all I was really pleased with the end result. The head is 5 3/4" and the cutting edges are 2 1/2" each. The haft is 15" made from some oak that Bruce Evans's had given me when he was out west a couple years ago.

That's beautiful Ray. It takes someone who has TRIED to make one to really appreciate the problems in it. I have tried several times and still haven't gotten the two sides completely symertical......

Beautiful !!! :)

Wow, nice axe! Have you tried to chop anything yet?
Mark and I.G. change their avatars on the same day, it must be a sign.
Ya know I.G., I didn't have too hard of a time looking at the original avatar, but I am having to avert my eyes right now.

You got that right, but I have had more practice at it. So when you get to be my age you are going to be uglier. :p :D

And just think, I didn't have a goal when I got up this morning. Okay, let's quit hijacking Rays thread. That is a sweet little axe Ray.

Way to go Ray...That is absolutely INCREDABLE..I bet Dad would like that you used his old wood for the handle also.

Totally agree. The first thought that popped into my head when I saw this little sweetie was, "What a great starting point for a Nessmuk tri-fecta!" Couple that with the Nessie you posted a pic of not too long ago and you are 2/3 of the way there. You don't happen to make pocket knives too, do ya? ;)

Ray, not being a forger I am not one to judge well but just as an enthusiast of fine craftsmanship I say WOW. She looks expensive to me.

Very cool! That is one sweet axe. I know what you mean about haveing to let a project sit for a while. Got something I need to be working on, if only the shop would thaw out.
