Took the fam for a little day hike at the coastal wildlife refuge..Considering it is in the shadow of the Manhattan skyline there its fairly diverse
Just a shot down the trail
an avid hiker
Some prickly pear cactus..THe're are loads of it here Not something you;d typically associate with the North east.
Yucca filamintosa (adam's needle) another plant you;d expect to find in the desert..This plant is dear to me because I started my first friction fire ever with a yucca spindle I found at this location...the fibers from the leaves also make outstanding cordage...(infact there might be a few leaves in my coat pocket right now)
WIld Rose (I've eaten the hips of this species many times It is edible but bland and starchy)
there where numerous stands of dwarf sumac
some raccoon tracks I took this picture because it is almost an ideal represntation of typical raccoon gait where the front foot and rear foot of the opposite side line up parallel.
I found this right next to his trail along with some pieces scattered about it;s part of a horseshoe crab carcass (there are 1000s of them here) no doubt he still had some meat on him when he met up with out raccoon friend
Nothing crazy just a mellow family day, any any day outdoors beats a day indoors
and besides the company was good
