Notice the differences in the two of these otherwise identical 8OT knives.

I bought the one a long time ago and it has been an occassional EDC for me since then as I really like the way it always cuts and is easy to sharpen. It was like over 10 years ago when I bought the older one which is the top one in the photo of the two here. I didn't notice the difference until I got it out of the box at home and looked at the way it closed. The new 8OT knife is bigger in the pocket for sure than the old one is. I could tell you blind folded which one I was carrying.

The new one is identical except for the longer sheeps foot blade. I picked up the new one at Wal-Mart as it was the last one left in stock. Both the other blades are identical to the old ones.

Anyone else noticed this? Is this a difference unique to this knife or are there more out there like it? I was just curious of the others out there since I had no others to compare to. Look at yours and let me know which you have and how old it is if you know. I just got the new one the other day and was not aware that the length of the sheeps foot blade had been increased on the new ones or why.

Thanks.

I don't have a Schrade Old Timer "Senior" 8OT -
but looking at the pictures of the 8OT on-line including this from the Old Timers page on the SchradeKnives.com web site (pretty recently set up) -
oldtimer8OTSmall.jpg

- comparing the relative lengths of the blades in that picture - I would speculate that you may have an anomoly -

Specs on the Schrade web site -
8OT - Senior
3 Blade Large Stockman
2 3/4" Clip Blade
1 3/4" Sheepfoot Blade
1 3/4" Spey Blade
4" Handle (Closed Position)

There is a Schrade Knives Forum under the Manufacturers Forums - where more knowledgable people may be able to shed some light on this.

Thanks. The other thing I didn't mention is the distinct bend in the blade on the new one as opposed to the old one. You can really see it here in this picture.

The sheeps foot blade on the new one I have here measures 2 and 1/4" for the edge to the tip measurement. From the back of the body where I would normally measure when the blade is in the open position it is over 2.5" in length.

I kind of hope it is an anomoly. That could add value in the future if not immediately and that is what I'm trying to find out.

Does the clip blade on the new one have more belly than the old one? I rember a thread awhile back about that change. Possibly the hole knife was "reworked" a bit.

This new 8OT is virtually identical in all respects to my old one with the exception of the sheeps foot blade being longer and without as much belly on it, and the stampings on the tang are slightly different. Old one says NY the new one has USA instead. Both say Schrade 8OT though.

All other blades are pretty much the same in all measurements and match up to the specs listed by Schrade for this knife.

Sheeps foot blade on this new one is fully a 1/2" longer than the specs call for from Schrade and when you compare it to the old 8OT in the photo.

The one I bought a year or two ago has the shorter blade. Also, it appears to be stainless, compared to the patina that developed on the other 2 blades.
