I am completely in the dark when it comes to proper blade care. I only have 3 Busse knives at this time, all game wardens. I have a muddy crinkle w/ tan Micarta, a black & red fatty, and a black & blue fatty. I would appreciate some advice on blade care and sharpening systems. From what I have read on the various posts here, I can't go wrong with the Edge Pro system for sharpening.
Can I use WD 40 on the blades and handles? What types and grits sand paper are best to use on the satin blades.
What is the best way to clean and store these blades?
I would appreciate any help. I know just about nothing about blade care and want to learn the proper methods.
thanks...

i clean my busse's with hot soapy water and a kitchen scrub brush. on crinkle coats that get covered with wood pitch i use a brillo sos steel wool pad.

for major sharpening and or re-profiling i use the edge pro.

for minor touch up i use a spyderco sharp maker, ceramic rod, or just a leather strop.

any good gun oil will protect your busse.

i store my users in their sheaths, whether leather or kydex.

These things are great for cleaning blades:

I still use the WD40 on blade and handle.
I would go with Skunk as he is running a Busse museum out in Idaho....

WD-40 is good for steel, but I wouldn't use it on micarta. You shouldn't need to clean micarta anyway.

With the coating on the blades, you only need to worry about the edge. I would say a wipe-down after use with WD-40 or a Sentry Tuf-Cloth and you'll be GTG. The biggest concerns are things like blood and salt water. A quick rinse under fresh water followed by a wipe-down of the blade with the above will take care of that.

Sharpening is another story. I use a Sharpmaker and stropping on a piece of shoe leather for all my knives, with good results.

Hmm. I certainly found a need to clean the Micarta on one of my BATACs earlier this month:

WD40 and a still nylon brush worked great!

I use CLP to clean. Then apply a coat of Renaissance Wax to most...apply with a chamois on satin.

I clean micarta with a Degreaser and a q-tip if it has oil from hands or cloth...it's super fast.

Lunde: damn, that's one messy blade. I guess I stand corrected :D

Hope it made for some good eating....

I have yet to find a substance that was not thinned out and brought down by carb choke cleaner. liquid atomized gasoline :D:thumbup:

but seriously I wouldn't recommend it. It's exactly like cleaning your tools with gasoline

I still do it though... I love the stuff.... I'm sure if you leave it on for very long it will start to work its magic on the coating, but I tend to only use it for pitch, sap, glue and oil residue. anything else normally comes off with either hand goo, wd40, or just soap.
