little knives

I am looking for a small fixed blade, for everyday carry. I am talking about approximately 2.5 inch blade, and 3-4 inch handle. I am basically looking for something about the size of a William Henry lancet, only in a heavy duty fixed blade. The only knife I know of of the top of my head would be Allen Blade's chipmonk, but I am looking for something a bit dressier. Any body have any suggestions?

Here's a pic of my Neil Blackwood Small Game. Blade is 2 3/4", OAL is 6 5/8". Mine is D2, but Neil also makes a nice one in stellite. You can check out Neil's knives here.

You might also check Bob Doziers small personal size fixed blades. D2 steel, great heat treat, fine grind, micarta handles with super ergonomics and great cutting ability. BTW, his kydex sheaths are also top notch.

I second the Doziers. For a really slim, functional and beautiful user you may check out his canoe neck knife at http://www.agrussell.com
You will find a lot of his other excellent small fixed blades there too. To order you may do a quick search, other companies (bladeart.com, tripleaughtdesign.com) may carry additional models and you can order directly from Bob Dozier too:

Thanks for the suggestions guys, i think I am going to order a Dan Cowles field agent. Does anybody have experience with the field agent or any other Dan Cowles knives?, I did a search and didn't find anything

I only know Don as a fellow member of a custom knife server list. Contact him for references if you want. He's a full time maker. He is a gentleman, well repected, and well liked.
FWIW I have found custom knife makers in general to be some of the finest and most honorable folks with which to do business. very rewarding, but that is another topic...

hmmmm, having just read blues's thread on the Carson F4, that sounds like a promising option; dress it up with fancy handle slabs & you're in business! Although the Cowles talonite FB recently posted on the Gallery page looks mighty mighty tasty too . . . .

A Rick Frigault Spear Tac might fit your bill. The ones on the site have 3" blades, but you could drop Rick a line and ask about making a smaller one. I have one of these, and you know that it's staying right there, in your hand, when you hold it. The Canoe Tac is similar, and is also close enough to your size requirement that it could easily be scaled down. The Chinto is already 6", with a 3" blade, so it would be truly 'little' with the blade scaled down.

This is why I dig these forums. You got some seriously good references out of this post. Every single moderate cost maker I could think of got covered by others. And I'd never seen Don Cowles page before.

[side note: Atlanta Virtual sure did a professional job with Don's web page too. Very nice, clean, easy, functional, good looking, professional. All he needs is a 3 megapixel camera to really capture the detail of the damascus.]

I can say that the Geno Denning stuff is very superior fit/finish for the money. I mean screaming bargain. He'll undoubtedly raise his prices soon. He's a George Herron protege if that means anything to you. [Nice page here too! check out that George Herron roller bearing blade support jig for hollow grinding. Man, everything is clean and white too so he can find stuff he drops. Man, am I a slob.]

Joel Chamblin is making some fixed blade hunters now. His fit/finish is first class. I find a drop point to be the most practical and useful everyday utility knife in general. Joel is a quiet, unassuming guy. I'll bet he'd make you a 2-1/2" drop point if you asked. See examples under http://www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com/chambhunt.htm

Consider having a "swinger sheath" built along with a belt sheath.

There are a bunch (4-5) of really great Japanese makers out there that do little baby Loveless drop points for front pocket carry in swinger sheath. You can catch them at bigger shows sometimes. One example I could find:
http://www.nordicknives.com/front.html
under "Custom by Artist"
see Yoshi Aida
That piece is $525 partly because he has a gorgeous piece of mastodon (if still there when you check the link).

Don Cowle's stuff sure looks first rate in the pics. Look how extremely he tapered that tang, and at the slanted/angled bolster/wood spacer/micarta slab handle fit! Talk about a great, functional little fixed blade design too, of totally rust-proof Talonite.

Glad I read this thread...thanks for the references guys.

Check out what he just posted:

I agree with 2 Don Cowles does great work, first rate, and Ray Kirk has very nice prices and is easy to work with. Whichever you choose you will be getting a first-class knife!
