Little Love for the BK10

To give a little background on this post, I have had my eye on the BK10 as a camp knife for some time and I really hope to purchase one fairly soon. However, I've noticed as I research Becker knives that the Becker BK10 Crewman gets very little press when compared with more popular knives like the BK2 and the BK22. What are the differences between the BK10 and the BK2 and why would you pick one knife over the other?

The 10 has a little more manageable thickness. I think it's 3/8". A not of folks like that aspect but aren't huge fans of the thumb ramp

The 2 is thicker. The 10 is 3/16 and the 2 is 1/4 inch.

I think that most of the Beckerheads would rather have the 12. I know I would. It is the only becker left on my wish list.

What appeals to me is the higher grind, drop/spear point shape, lack of swedge and slighter longer blade. These are just my preferences. Hopefully other Beckerheads will chime in. The BK10 does have it beat on price.

I hope to hear from other Beckerheads as well! When you say that one of the blades appeals to you, are you referencing the BK12 or the BK2?

I was referring to the 12 in comparison to the 10. I do not actually have either one but the 12 is the one I want.

There are some that like the BK10... but it simply doesn't appeal to me. It's too big to be a small knife, and too small to be a big knife (IMO).
The BK12, mentioned above, will not be found (new) under that name. It is Doug Ritter's take on the heavy duty survival knife; and he consulted with Ethan Becker for its design. The real name is the Ritter RSK Mk2 Perseverance. It is a dealer exclusive; meaning it can only be purchased (new) from one place.

The 12, is the (unofficial?) number designation given to a Becker/Ritter collaboration that is available only through Knifeworks.
I lust for one with some TKC scales... It's made by Rowen, not Kabar.

The 2 and the 22 are the same knife, just with a different sheath.

The other uber-popular Becker knives are the BK9 and the BK16.

The 16 is my all time favorite Becker knife and possibly my favorite fixed blade without any further qualification. It is strong, light, cuts very well and is very comfortable in the hand. It's also one of the reasons i don't have a BK10. The BK10 is just over an inch longer, but much bigger in profile. Larger grip, taller blade, etc... the BK16 can do 90% of what the BK10 does, but in a smaller slimmer package. The only thing the 10 can do better is larger knife tasks, but based on the one time i got some dirt time with one, at only a 5.5" blade, it's not really big enough to excel that those big knife chores either. Considering it's nearly twice the weight of a BK16, I just dont see the cost/benefit analysis adding up in favor of the 10.

It would be a great all around blade, but it's just not for me.

I just plain like the BK10, no reason needed. I carry it when the BK9 is too big, and the BK2 is just too heavy.

It was the thumb ramp that made me decide to get a second BK 2.

Editcus: It was the thumb ramp. Was thinking of another Becker I didn't get...so many to cover many jobs is why.

The 10 is my chosen "one knife".
I like many others, and you can't go wrong with most, but the 10 is the perfect small big knife. The 2 is great if splitting wood is your primary concern, but it's heavy, tiring, and not as great a cutter due to geometry (but splits well due to that geometry).

I dont own a 2 but it looks too thick and heavy for such a short blade length imo. I do love the shape though. I was yearning for a 10 as well recently but remembered the 12, which up until recently hated the looks of (i finally cam to my senses!) i found one on the exchange recently for a decent price! The 10 looks like a great knife as well, i just prefer drop points over clips. Its really down to personal preference. Do you use your knife to pry more than cut? Do you like drop points or clips?
Like others have said as well the 9 and the 16 are an excellent all around combo.

I would not use anything other than a BK3 to pry (if I had one, drool...) unless I really, really had to. I’m not decided on drop points or clips... I am definitely looking now at the 16 more closely...

I've owned a couple of BK10's, including a Cam model. Like the knife okay, but didn't see anything particular it could do that my BK2's couldn't, so ended up selling them. That said, I'll probably end up with another one of these days, haha. I did a rendering of a modded BK10 I wouldn't mind giving a go. ;)

The bk2 (aka sharpened pry bar) is the same thickness as the 3...
I would try to figure out what i was going to use the knife for before making a purchase personally. Not every knife (or purchase for that matter) needs justification but if this is going to be your go to camp knife i would take all things into consideration first. The 10/12 are similar enough, the 2 isnt going to cut as well but im sure you could get by, the 16 though is a different animal imo. You said it would be a camp knife but that could mean different things to different people. Its your money though so you can do wht you want of course.
ETA: I'm not condoning or condemning prying with a knife. But if you ARE you going to pry there are knives better equipped than others.
