Hey everyone! Noticed a scratch in my BAS and I decided to put it to use chopping. My gf accidently hit a rock and the tip is a little gnarled up I will post a pic tomorrow and also this was the first time using tithe steel is dull and rolled a tiny bit. I read this usually happens the first couple times using it. I am not familiar with sharpening I might get the sharp maker but I was wondering what sand paper and grits to use to take out some scratches and sharpen the blade again, saw a method where a guy used sand paper on a phone book and shaved his leg after. I was impressed just trying to get a feel for what grits to use and to ramp up to, also how would the syderco sharp maker fair in sharpening a kukri? Thanks!!

Your BAS needs sharpening before u use it regardless of the edge. To get the best performance and reduce the risk of chips and rolling. The entire edge should be sharpened to remove the bur and fine edge. Sharpmaker works great. Start with the medium sticks for at least ten swipes on each side then move to the fine and do the same. The edge should be ready after this. If you have a strop, use it. It will strengthen the edge even more. You can also strop on your hand if you have somewhat rough hands or your jeans pants or a leather belt will work also. Just slap some compound to it and your good. Flatten the rolls out the best you can and hopefully the chips are small. Because if you dont file them out before sharpening, they will become sharp chips in the blade. I have a few blades like this. Search the threads for many more ways to get ready.

the tip is deliberately left a bit softer than the belly 'sweet spot' so it will deform rather than snap off. use the chakma (the unsharpened little 'knife' tool) to straighten & rub the dings out before you sharpen (or tap them out with a small hammer on an anvil or anvil subsitute).
