I'm a newbie here and hoping for some advice. I have a 10+ year old Gerber International Silver Knight. It has a 1.75" blade and is about 2.5" long, or at least it had a 1.75" blade before I broke the tip off abusing it.

I'd like to replace it with something of the same size. Size is my number 1 issue and the Gerber Silver Knights made today are about 50% bigger, so they're out.

After that I want a reasonable price and something that will put up with some abuse. It is going to get carried in my pocket with car keys. It is going to open boxes and mail. It is going to cut open a lot of oranges and get the acid from orange juice on it for hours. I will try and remember not to use use it as a little tiny pry bar, or at least not often.

Any suggestions?

Al Mar comes to mind, though aren't cheap. You could also try a Spyderco Jester for a tiny key chain knife

My favorite knives in that size range are the Spyderco Mouse and the Kershaw Chive. They both have 1.9" blades and are under 3.0" overall.

Spyderco discontinued the Mouse, but you can now get several versions of the same design from Blade-Tech. This is the toughest really small knife I've ever handled.

The Chive is thinner and intended for lighter duty, but it's also a great little knife. The assisted-opening is a lot of fun to play with. :)

Camillus makes a 2.25" steel handled lockback called the Silver Sword. It's about $15 at online stores.

Benchmade Benchmite. it'll run you about 70 bones, but i have no doubt that it'd last you MANY years, perhaps a lifetime with the limited use you've mentioned. it's an absolutely beautiful knife with a 1.95" blade made from 154CM steel (which is great), and a slim and elegant titanium handle. so thin you will honest-to-goodness forget it's in your pocket.

also, it will be easy to maintain and clean from your fruit-cutting chores. oh, and it has a lanyard hole, so you can attach it to your keychain.

Camillus, Buck, Bear, Queen, Hen and Rooster, etc. all make small folders with traditional handle materials. I can't think of anything though that's similar to the Silver Knight - those knives are distinctive (I have a couple of them myself). You'll be disappointed replacing your very classy Silver Knight with a plastic folder...

Are you ~sure~ the new ones are too large? SMKW has the wood handled model for $33, and the stainless model for only $25.

How about a customized Buck Gents lockback from Sante Fe Stoneworks? Very classy, and the right size.

Happy Shopping,
Bob

Silver knights came in three lengths. Yours was the shortest, the medium size was about 3 1/4" closed, and the longest was about 3 1/2 - 3 5/8 closed. They show up on ebay fairly regularly, especially in pearl. You might want to check there.

Thanks for the help. So far I like the chive the best, but wish it came wood inlay handles.

Why not buy a Silver Knight of Ebay and get what you want, they go for anywhere $20 to $60 depending on newness and scale material.

Try a small Spyderco Ladybug or a Jester. Maybe a Buck Silver Knight. A Kershaw Chive. If it is going to get messed up, and you don't want to ruin a good knife, Frost has all kinds of cheapies that will hold up to activities like opening mail and cutting food.
