these aren't brand new, but were new to me and a search didn't yield any results, so I figured I'd post up my experience with them
it's a small fire starter that is contained in a sliding tin, they are advertised as being waterproof, easily lit and able to burn up to 20 minutes (or reused multiple times). I watched a video and was pretty intrigued so ended ordering an Original this past winter
First a few specs- the Live Fire Original is ~ 3" long by 1" and ~ 1/3" high, pretty small. Weight is pretty nice as well, 0.8 oz.
My impression is very good
On one of my snowshoeing trips this past winter I got a chance to give the little tin a whirl. I prepped a small platform fire on the snow for lunch. I fluffed up the microfiber with my fingers and w/ one scrape on the ferro rod it was lit. I slid the tin under the twigs/tinder and within a minute or so I had a good fire going and snuffed the tin out by sliding over the lid. It appears I have many more fires left in the tin (depending on how long you let it burn).
I was hoping this would be a surefire starter than could be used under sub optimum conditions, so far it appears exactly that. I'm putting one in my wife's fire kit; she's not really fire savy (need to work on that
)and doesn't use a ferro rod, but with a lighter or storm match, I'm confident she can easily get the tin lit and hopefully with 20 minutes of burn can get a fire going
I got to use it several more times over the winter and remained impressed- still has about half the material remaining- so several more fires likely.
I ended up ordering a couple of the Sport models, smaller/lighter yet- I put one in my fire kit for the Bob Marshall Open, confident that if I needed to get a fire when the chips were down, this would do the trick
If you're looking for something that will work under very adverse conditions, this might be worth taking a peek at
