I'm looking for a smaller fixed blade and this might fit the bill if I can just find out what size it is - the website doesn't say. Looks like a nice little knife. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had one for a little bit then sold it.

IMHO, it is best as a skinner. as a utility the blade is very short and upswept it can be used but I think a clip or drop point are better suited as utilty. I think his other model in the same size range would be best for utility. exrg(?) I think it is called.

The grind also came really bad and I had to wait very long alot longer than he said.

The steel was awesome 1095. once I reground the edge.

The kydex was good too.

the handle was extremely comfortable.

I'm waiting for a HKR model. Seems like a big guy and I asked Newt to customize it with a satin finish and polished micarta. He said it should be sent as of last Friday but I haven't heard anything (if it was sent or not). I'm looking forward to this one. Good price....looks like a reliable blade. I hope to see it soon.

The BHB is a nice knife. It is satin finished, with polished micarta handles. It has a nice, non-military look and feel. For pure utility purposes, I prefer the Little Pecker or the Executive NRGS

Greg,

I have an HKR. I got it from a forumite who got it from another forumite who got it from a Special Forces soldier who carried it all over the world. (Story checked out) It is an older one. I will say that it is one hefty blade! I can't speak of the original grind or the newer Kydex, but I can tell you I would feel very comfortable rooting around Kodiak with it. Did you ever get that Marlin Guide Gun? How do you like it? Was it .444 or 45/70?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the post. Yes, I am definitely looking forward to getting this knife. Hopefully Newt will have it done soon.

Yep, I got that Marlin guide gun, I got the .450. I have to say it is a fantastic gun, accurate and certainly the perfect gun for walking the high grass of Kodiak. I put a Williams sight on it and it is very accurate at 100 yeards.

How big is the blade on your HKR?

I have a BHB & recently carried it fishing- the kydex sheath is comfortable & oriented more-or-less horizontally w/ a slight angle up for the handle. It cut everything it was asked to cut after touching up the edge a fair bit- shrimp & bloodworms (not too hard) as well as rope & around the gills & bellies on a bunch of croaker. The steel is either 1095 or A2 & it stained a little from the salt water- no big surprise. It's a really handy utility knife, but as mentioned above, the Executive NRG is probably the better defensive tool.

Greg,

The .450 completely slipped my mind. That should be good medicine for close range encounters. (God forbid) Are you, or have you considered, using cast bullets? I seem to recall us discussing this in the thread in Community a while back, but refresh my memory.
The HKR I have has a 9" polished blade. It came with a camo Kydex sheath and smooth burgundy Micarta scales. I remember Newt mentioning in a thread some time ago on his forum, that this is one of the early incarnations. The heft of it certainly gives one a feeling of security. The one I have definitely isn't a slicer.:) It has been sharpened so many times that it would need some significant reprofiling. Mine is a 1/4 inch blade and has stamped on one side, 95, and on the other side, Newt Livesay and 5C. It also has Rapid Deployment stamped on the main portion of the blade. I think Newt might have changed the newer ones to 3/16 though. You would want to carry a smaller knife (or from what I've read in your past posts, three or four smaller knives;) ) for slicing. This HKR definitely has been used. That's what I like about it though. Knowing it has been around the world on military ops adds to it's character. I got it from Chad234. That's what he liked about it too.
On another note, my brother and his family are up in Alaska as we speak. How is the weather up there? (That's probably a silly question. Alaska being so big, it's kind of like asking, "How's the weather in the middle portion of the country?") He is a Doctor and is being recruited by a couple towns. This is his second all expenses paid trip up there in the last two months. The lucky dog!:)

ps- All this talk about the HKR has me pumped up to use it. I have an 8" tree that is dead in my back yard. I was going to use my RTAK to fell it, but I think I'll use the ol' HKR.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Hey Greg, I used to live in Kodiak back in the 80s when I was a Coastie, it was great. Maybe I'll get back there one day.
